Miners Take Opening Series

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners took three of four from the Truman Bulldogs this weekend in the season opening series. The Miners swept Saturday's doubleheader but the 'Dogs bounced back to take the opener Sunday 5-3 and had the tying run 90 feet away in the finale before falling 5-4.
 
Truman will open up MIAA play next weekend against Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

Miners' pitcher Zack Gronek fanned eight Bulldogs and allowed just three hits in the complete game shutout in the opener.  Josh Caffrey started the scoring with a two out double off of Truman starter Tyler Stefan in the bottom of the first and the Miners were able to chase Stefan from the game with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The three hits, all singles were collected by the Bulldogs newcomers Blake Marino, Adam Manzer and Zak Larkin.

Missouri S&T 11, Truman 4
 
MST plated six runs, aided by three Bulldog errors in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the nightcap 11-4. Daniel Jewett went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Truman. Jarrett Eiskina was tagged with the loss after going five innings, allowing three runs, two earned and striking out five. Jerod Hahn collected two hits as all eight in the game were singles.

Truman 5, Missouri S&T 3

Blake Marino delivered the key hit as Truman took the opening game of Sunday's twinbill by a 5-3 score. Marino's two out single in the third scored a pair of runs to give Truman a 4-0 lead. The Miners would plate three of their own in the fourth but Zak Larkin got another two-out RBI single for an insurance run in the sixth. Jordan Howe and Devon Myers also had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs. Logan Siegler picked up the win going four innings, striking out six and Chris Allard pitched three scoreless innings for the save.

Missouri S&T 5, Truman 4

The Bulldogs had the tying run 90 feet away in the top of the ninth but a game-ending double-play gave the Miners the 5-4 win. Truman spotted the Miners a 5-0 lead but a run in the seventh and two in the eighth set up the last inning fireworks. Steven Rose went 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Paul McMahon was tagged with the loss going four and a third allowing three earned runs and four hits.
