Tennis Splits With Tritons In St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – The Truman women's tennis team pulled out a thrilling 5-4 victory over Missouri-St. Louis while the men fell 7-2 to the Tritons on Sunday afternoon. The teams will be back in action on Wednesday in Kirksville against Rockhurst (Mo.).
 
The Bulldogs trailed 2-1 following doubles matches with Kim Birenbaum and Maggi Schutte edging out Katie Rynkiewich and Leticia Garcia by a 9-8 score for the lone win.
 
In singles, Birenbaum was a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 winner at number three and Schutte won 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at number four. Jennifer Hawkins won the match with a straight set winner while Dagmar Velez rallied after dropping the first 6-7 (5-7) to win the next two sets at 6-3, 6-1 to give Truman the advantage heading into the final wave of matches.
 
In the men's match, Adam King and Joe Murphy-Baum were 8-6 winners at number three doubles while Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith fell 9-8 at number two.
 
Murphy-Baum needed three sets but eventually got the win at number five singleles over Tim Gorter 7-6, 6-0, 7-6.  Three of the singles matches needed three sets to be decided and all six had at least one set go to seven games.
 
The men are now 3-2 on the season while the women evened their record to 3-3.
 
Rockhurst will be in town on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. dual match with the teams.
