Tennis Splits Saturday Affair With Emporia State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Men's Tennis team opened conference action with a 7-2 win over Emporia State while the women fell by the same score to the Lady Hornets in their second league match of the season.  The teams have a quick turnaround as they will be in Maryville on Sunday for a dual with Northwest Missouri State University.

The men took two of three in doubles action with the top duo of Eric McCollough and Mark Sturley winning 8-4 and the number three tandem of Adam King and Joe Murphy-Baum taking an 8-3 decision. Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith lost by a break 8-6 at number two.

Truman controlled singles play winning five of the six matches, all in straight sets. The only loss was Smith at number three.

The men improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Hornets dropped to 6-5 and 0-2 in the conference.
All three doubles matches on the ladies side went to the Lady Hornets with scores of 8-4, 8-4 and 8-3.

In singles, Kim Birenbaum won at number three by scores of 6-4 and 6-1 and Maggi Schutte took number four 6-2, 6-2 for the only Bulldog points during the match. Jennifer Hawkins extended Emily Huston to three sets before dropping her match
at number five and Dagmar Velez lost 7-6, 6-2 at number two.

The women fall to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA while the Lady Hornets move to 13-3 and 3-1 in conference.
