Bulldogs & Hawks Split Matches

QUINCY, Ill.  – Of the 18 singles and doubles matches played between the Quincy Hawks and Truman Bulldogs on Wednesday each school came away with nine wins. The Bulldog women were 5-4 victors over the Lady Hawks while the Quincy men took a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs.
 
The women improved to 5-7 overall after holding on to a 5-4 win in their match. Kim Birenbaum and Maggi Schutte took number two doubles 8-4 and Kelsey Porter and Jessica Gennuso won number three 8-1 to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage heading into singles. Ellen Russell and Dagmar Velez lost by a break to Pam and Leslie Ganer (8-6).
 
The Ganer sisters individually defeated Russell and Velez in the top two singles matches but Birenbaum pulled out a three-set winner at number three (3-6, 6-2, 6-1). Kati Austin and Porter were straight set winners at five and six singles respectively to clinch the match.
 
The men's record was evened at five apiece following their loss to the Hawks. Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith picked up the lone doubles point with an 8-2 win at number two.
 
In singles, Smith rallied to win in three sets at number three (2-6, 6-4, 6-0) and Adam King won 7-5, 6-1 at number four. Kirk Schlueter also forced a tie-break third set in his match at number six singles as he won 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.  
 
The pivotal match occurred at number two singles as the Hawks' Lane Luhring came from behind to defeat Ohlhausen 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
 
The teams will host a pair of conference duals in the final week of the regular season for tennis. First up will be the Washburn Ichabods/Lady Blues on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. followed by Southwest Baptist University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
 
It will be the final home action for the Bulldogs under the direction of Coach Pete Kendall and Bulldog fans are invited to come out this weekend to help celebrate his 20 years as coach.
