Men Fall To Washburn 5-2 In Consolation Finals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After taking two of three doubles matches, the Bulldog men's tennis team couldn't hold on as Washburn University defeated Truman 5-2 in the consolation finals of the MIAA Postseason Tournament.

Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith won their number two doubles match 8-4 and Adam King and Mike Merchant took number three by the same score however the Ichabods won four singles matches to claim the consolation final of the MIAA Men's Tennis tournament 5-2. The Ichabods claimed straight set wins at numbers two, three, four and five to end the Bulldogs season at 6-9 overall.
 
Saturday's Results
The Bulldog men's tennis team lost to top-seeded Northwest Missouri on Saturday while the women defeated Missouri Western 5-0 before falling 5-1 at the MIAA Tennis Championships on Saturday in Kansas City.
 
The men will face Washburn on Sunday morning in the men's consolation finals while the women's season concludes with a record of 7-11 overall.

The Bulldogs lost the three doubles matches by scores of 8-5, 8-2 and 8-0 to fall behind 3-0. Northwest then picked up straight set wins at number two as Jake Ohlhausen lost 6-0, 6-3 and at number four as Adam King went down 6-2, 6-1.

The women advanced to the fifth place match with a 5-0 shutout over the Griffons. Ellen Russell and Dagmar Velez won 8-4 at number one doubles, Kim Birenbaum and Maggi Schutte  won 8-6 at number two and Jessica Gennuso and Kelsey Porter took number three by an 8-1 score.  In singles action, Schutte took number four singles 6-1, 6-1 and Jennifer Hawkins won number five singles 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the victory.

Fort Hays State 5, Truman 1
The Tigers used the momentum of two narrowly decided doubles matches to take the fifth place match in the MIAA Tournament by a 5-1 score. Kim Birenbaum and Maggi Schutte were 8-6 winners at number two however Ellen Russell and Dagmar Velez fell 9-8 (7-1) at number one and Kelsey Porter and Jessica Gennuso lost 9-7 at number two. The Tigers then picked up three singles wins at number two, three and five to pick up the win.


Friday's Results
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Truman Men's Tennis team advanced to the semi-final round of the MIAA postseason tournament with a 6-0 victory over Emporia State on Friday while the women lost 5-0 to Northwest Missouri. The men will face Northwest Missouri on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. while the women will take on Missouri Western at 9:00 a.m.

Truman swept all three doubles matches with the biggest win coming in the top draw. Eric McCollough and Mark Sturley pulled out a 9-8 (7-5) win at number one while Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith won 8-4 at number two and Adam King and Mike Merchant winning 8-6 at number three.

Needing two points for the win, Truman picked up three singles wins with Ohlhausen winning 6-2, 6-2 at number two, Merchant and Kirk Schlueter taking identical 6-3, 6-2 victories at five and six respectively.

The Bearcats sent Truman into the consolation side of the bracket with a 5-0 victory over the Bulldogs.  Northwest won two of the three doubles matches handily while at number two, Truman's Maggi Schutte and Kim Birenbaum lost by a break at 8-6.
 
Northwest got their two singles wins at number one as Ellen Russell was defeated 6-1, 6-1 and Schutte fell 6-2, 6-1.
