Mavericks Punch In Late Goal To Down 'Dogs

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Playing through the remnants of Hurricane Isaac, the Minnesota State University Mavericks spoiled the season opener for the Truman Bulldogs by scoring a late goal to win 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Truman Soccer Park.

Brieanne West punched in a rebound in the 78th minute of play to give the Mavericks the lead. Jessica Bowe sent the ball into the six-yard area where Truman keeper Emily Bozdeck got a hand on it but it went right to West for the score.

With five minutes left, Truman had a golden chance as a center passing from the right side found Olivia Hayes all alone but the shot from 18-yards out was corralled by keeper Molly McGough.

Hayes got the assist on the game's first goal as she volleyed a pass to Trisha Shoemaker, who headed it in in the 17th minute to put Truman on top.

Courtney Vallarelli found Tori Meinhardt three minutes just later for the equalizer.

The Mavericks had a flurry of chances in the early in the second half off a pair of corner kicks with Bozdeck making six saves, five in the second 45. Minnesota State outshot the Bulldogs 19-9 but it was much closer in shots on goal with the Mavericks edging the 'Dogs 8-6.

Truman will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Winona (Minn.) State University at noon.
