Tennis Sweeps Past Westminster In Home Debut

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Tennis teams downed Westminster (Mo.) College on Wednesday afternoon in the first dual action of the fall season. The women swept the Blue Jays 9-0 while the men were victorious 8-1.  The women will be back in action this weekend as the team hosts the Truman Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
 
It was the first action of the fall for the women and they came out blazing with three straight doubles wins.  Maggie Schutte and Kim Birenbaum won 8-3 at number one, Kati Austin and Savanah Everett won 8-1 at number two and Jess Gennuso and Kelsey Porter won by the same 8-1 tally at number three.
 
All six singles matches went Truman's way with five coming in straight sets. Schutte was forced to a third set after winning the first 6-1 and taking the number one singles in the tie-break 6-3. Lauren Higgins was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number five and newcomer Holly Cantalupo did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number six.
 
The men also swept through doubles with scores of 8-3, 8-3 and 8-1. Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith took the top doubles match, Adam King and Patrick Spain won number two and Mike Merchant and Kirk Schlueter won number three.
 
Ohlhausen was the only 'Dog to taste defeat at number one singles. He won the first set 7-5 but lost the final two 6-1 and 10-3. Smith, King, Schlueter, Merchant and Joe Stuhlmann were all straight set winners for the Bulldogs.
 
The women will host the Truman Invitational this weekend in Kirksville while the men will be off until the ITA Regional event in Springfield, Mo. the following weekend.
 
The wins also marked the first dual wins for new Bulldog coach Dan Blodgett.
