Box Score | Season Stats

FAYETTE, Iowa - - Senior Andy Chapman scored twice – both on feeds from fellow senior Charlie Backus – and the Truman men's soccer team opened MIAA play with a key three points behind a 2-1 win at Upper Iowa on Friday afternoon.

Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) put the Bulldogs ahead right before the half, as he finished a Backus (St. Louis, Mo., CBC) rebound in the 42nd minute for a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 59th minute, it was Backus to Chapman again, as the 6-foot-1 forward found the ball in the air off a corner for a header.

Upper Iowa would get on the board less than four minutes later, as Troy Parker found pay-dirt to cut Truman's lead to 2-1, but the Bulldogs held on for their third straight victory and opened league play with a 1-0 mark and moved to 3-2 overall for the season.

For the game, the Bulldogs out-shot the Peacocks 20-11, including an 8-4 mark for shots on goal. Both teams finished with three corners each, with Truman giving both Nick Wallner (St. Louis, Mo., SLU High) (69 minutes) and Drew Garrone (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette) (21 minutes) time in net.

Chapman now has three goals on the season with Backus taking the team lead with four assists. Wallner earns the win in net to get to 3-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs take the next six days off before returning to the road for two matches in three days, starting next Thursday (Sept. 20) night at Lindenwood (Mo.) University. Kickoff from St. Charles is set for 7:30 pm.
