Wrestling Drops MIAA Opener To Lions

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Wrestling team lost their conference opening dual by a 23-15 score to Lindenwood (Mo.) University on Friday night in Pershing Arena. Ryan Maus, Colton Schmitz, Nate Seiler, Helmut Rentschler and Ryan Ward all picked up wins for the Bulldogs.
 
Blayne Shockley put the Lions on top with a first period pin over Truman's Jabez Zinabu and Michael Caldwell increased the margin to 10-0 win a major victory over JJ Dorrell, who had moved up a weight class due to injuries.
 
With the 149 match tied at one apiece in the final period, Ryan Maus got a takedown with 20 seconds remaining and added a near fall for a 6-1 decision.
 
Colton Schmitz followed with five quick points in the first period and won 7-1 at 157.
 
Matt Greene secured a pin for the Lions at 174 late in the third period but Truman would win the final three matches of the dual.
 
Nate Seiler used a second period escape and a third period take down to win at 184 by an 8-1 decision.
 
Helmut Rentschler was able to get back points on Padric Lynch late in the second period and rode him out in the third for a 4-0 win.
 
In the 285 bout, Ryan Ward scored a first period takedown but Spencer Daniels tied the match with under 15 seconds left. Ward quickly escaped on the restart to win 4-3 to even his season record at 7-7.
 
The Bulldogs will be on the road Sunday as they face Benedictine (Kan.) at 2:00 p.m. and return to Pershing Arena on Wednesday night for another MIAA dual against the University of Central Missouri.
