Wrestling Closes Out Conference Dual Season This Week

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Three nationally ranked teams are on the docket as the Truman Wrestling team concludes the MIAA dual season this week. The Bulldogs will open at home on Wednesday against the University of Central Oklahoma, ranked third in Division II and will follow this weekend with road trips to T13th Nebraska-Kearney and #15 Fort Hays (Kan.) State.
 
The Bulldogs have been idle since competing in the Missouri Valley Open on Jan. 19th and were led by a pair of second place finishes by Alex and Ryan Maus. Alex claimed second in the 141-pound weight division while Ryan took the silver in the 149 bracket.  Helmut Rentschler was the third 'Dog to place at the meet finishing sixth at 197.
 
Junior Colton Schmitz leads the team with a 21-7 record on the season , he is 6-2 since moving down from 165 to 157 pounds. Schmitz had his 12-match winning streak snapped at the Missouri Valley tournament in a 5-2 decision to Maryville's (Mo.) Christian Loges.
 
Ryan Maus and Schmitz are the only two Bulldogs to win both of their conference bouts this year.
 
Central Oklahoma can wrap up the MIAA dual title with wins against the Bulldogs on Wednesday and a win at Central Missouri on Thursday. The Bronchos feature six wrestlers that were ranked in the latest Division II Coaches Association rankings while as a team, UCO has been holding steady at number three.
 
Truman will conclude the conference portion of the dual season with a trip to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday and Fort Hays State on Sunday. The Lopers are the defending NCAA Division II champions but have dropped to a tie for 13th in the Division II rankings while the Tigers are making a steady climb from 19th to 15th in the latest survey.
 
Dual History:
Truman is 0-8 in dual matches against Central Oklahoma with the last taking place during the 2009 season. The Bulldogs are 0-6-1 against the Lopers with the last meeting in the 2001-02 campaign. Truman has competed the last couple of years against Fort Hays State in the “MIAA Duals” but just 1-8 against the Tigers. Fort Hays defeated the Bulldogs 31-12 in Pershing Arena last season.
