Bulldogs Rout Red Lions in 2013-14 Debut

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman men's basketball team shot 59 percent from the floor and got 21 points apiece from Mike Carlson and Reed Mells on the way to a 92-52 season-opening rout of Lincoln Christian (Ill.) on Saturday night in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs (1-0) built an 18-point halftime lead then pushed it to as many as 42 before settling for the 40-point win. Mells (9-12 FG) and Carlson (7-9 FG) combined to miss just five total attempts from the floor in 28 minutes each. Carlson added seven rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Mells chipped in six rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Isaac Gardner came off the bench to score 12 points, while freshman guard Kyle Kanaskie lit up three different stat lines with seven points, eight assists and six rebounds in his collegiate debut. Cory Myers was perfect from the floor (1-1 FG, 6-6 FT) for eight points while also adding three assists and a swipe in his 23 minutes of playing time.

Truman hit 34 of its 58 total attempts from the field, including a 7-for-23 mark from three-point range, while also connecting on 17-of-22 free throw attempts. Meanwhile, the 'Dog defense held LCC to a 33% field goal mark (21-for-63) and just five three-pointers in 22 attempts.

The Bulldogs will be off Sunday before returning the floor on Monday (Nov. 11) night for a 7:30 pm showdown with Central Christian (Mo.) in Pershing Arena.
