Bulldogs & Bearcats Split Home Doubleheader

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Blake Marino collected four hits and Jordan Howe added a pair of doubles in a doubleheader split with Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University on Wednesday afternoon at home. The Bulldogs took the opener behind Logan Siegler 2-1 but fell in the second game 9-4. Truman will host Emporia (Kan.) State University this weekend for a three-game series.
 
Marino went four for six on the day while Howe was three of six with his two doubles. The Bulldogs hit just .233 as a team but were successful in five of eight stolen base attempts.
 
The Bearcats got two quality starts from Zach Winchester and Justin Pasichnyk and five SBU players had three hits apiece in the double dip. Zach Pirrello was one of the Bearcats that had three hits and also drove in three runs.

Logan Siegler worked around seven hits and Tim Lee picked up the save in Truman's 2-1 game one victory. Siegler tossed six innings as he stranded 10 Bearcat runners for his third win of the season.
 
Siegler left two stranded in the top of the first when he got Spencer Blachsher swinging on strike three then the Bulldogs took advantage of a pair of Bearcat errors in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Blake Marino grounded to deep short to bring in Zak Larkin for the run but Chris Zrostlik struck out with the bases loaded.
 
The Bearcats got a leadoff walk in the second and Ross Wolfe would later score on a suicide bunt by Josh Herrick. Siegler tried to flip the ball home to catch Wolfe but catcher Mike Monfre couldn't handle the toss as Wolfe slid in to tie the game.  Siegler would get two more groundouts to end the inning with runners in scoring position.
 
The first two reached in the SBU third but Siegler rung up Blacksher and Kyle Jochems to end the threat.
 
The Bulldogs used that momentum in the bottom of the third to push across what would be the winning run. Paul Trenhaile led off with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch and went to third on a single by Marino.
 
Trenhaile would score on a suicide bunt from Joe Emery, however Truman would leave two on of their own with no outs.
 
Siegler worked around two on with one-out in the fifth and a one-out double in the sixth before giving way to Tim Lee in the seventh. Lee would get three straight groundouts to shortstop Zak Larkin for the save.

Corbin Williams manufactured his own run as he took advantage of three SBU errors in the bottom of the first to stake the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead. Williams reached on bobble by the second baseman, then went to second after a wild throw on a failed pick-off attempt at first. He stole third and on a steal  ans scored when the throw sailed into left allowing Williams to touch the plate.
 
The Bearcats tied the game in the third on a one-out walk to Christian Binger and a stolen base by Binger put him in scoring position. A single to second by Zach Pirrello tied the game.
 
SBU's big inning came in the fourth as the first three reached. Will Swofford hit a sac fly and Josh Herrick grounded out to bring home two runs. Binger doubled in another and Pirrello singled again to center to chase starter Mark Roberts and make it 5-1.
 
Bo Helsel drove in two more runs in a three-run sixth and Jarod Robillard singled in Ross Wolfe in the seventh to make it 9-1.
 
The Bulldogs tried to rally back as Williams singled in a pair with two outs in the seventh. Trenhaile doubled in the eighth but was the only run to score after two more reached via hit by pitch.
 
Howe doubled in the ninth and scored on a single by Zak Larkin.
 
Justin Pasichnyk pitched six and two-thirds and struck out six Bulldogs and was followed to the hill by Ryan Harralston and Jacob Sullinger.
 
Mark Roberts took the loss as he pitched into the fourth and was followed by Andrew Range and Tyler Spencer.
