Men's Soccer Dealt Late Setback at UMSL

ST. LOUIS - - Nick Franta logged his third goal of the season to give the Truman men's soccer team a lead, but Missouri-St. Louis scored two late goals – including the game-winner with 2:22 to play – to hand Truman a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.

The loss marked the first of the year for the Bulldogs, who entered the contest with a 3-0 mark. Truman now sits at 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the GLVC, while UMSL improves to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in the GLVC.

Neither team found pay-dirt until the 65^th minute when Nick Franta scored an unassisted tally to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Franta chipped a shot over the head of UMSL keeper Jeremiah Cooper from the right side for his third score of 2013.

UMSL, however, applied pressure and eventually broke through following a corner kick in the 75^th minute, when Nick Cherry scored his first goal of the season to tie the match. Then, in the 88^th minute, Cherry fed Jon Huelsman for a left-foot shot past Bulldog keeper Drew Garrone for the game-winner.

Garrone made four saves, as UMSL out-shot Truman 17-12 on the afternoon. The Tritons held just a 6-5 edge in shots on goal, while the Bulldogs earned seven corner kicks to just four for the host Tritons.

Truman returns to action next weekend with a pair of home GLVC tilts, beginning on Friday, Sept. 20, at 3:30 pm against Lewis (Ill.) and concluding on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2:30 pm against UW-Parkside.
