KIRKSVILLE  - - In a match that lived up to its top-20 billing, it was the 5th-ranked Central Missouri Jennies who escaped Pershing Arena with a 3-2 victory against the 18th-ranked Truman volleyball team on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs (6-5) completely dominated the first two sets of play, holding the Jennies (13-0) to just 22 points total (25-12, 25-10) en route to a 2-0 lead. However, UCM rebounded to a 25-17 third-set win before closing out a 20-20 fourth set with a 5-2 run to send the match to a tiebreaking fifth frame.

From there, the teams played back and forth to 8-8, until a sustained 6-3 run gave the Bulldogs match point at 14-11. A Bulldog service error and two attack errors later, however, the match was knotted at 14 apiece. The squads sided-out all the way to 18-all, before UCM got a kill at the net in front of a final Bulldog attack error for the 20-18 decision.

The Bulldogs covered UCM in nearly every statistical category, including kills (68-50), digs (82-63) and attack percentage (.286 - .153), with the teams both serving six aces and finishing with a 5-4 Truman edge in total blocks.

Sophomore Ali Patterson led all players with 17 points (15 kills, two block assists and an ace) while hitting .448, while fellow sophomore Abby Heise and junior Allie Brak also put away 15 kills each. Heise hit .444 with seven digs, while Brak tallied her 33rd career double-double by adding 11 digs. Freshman Jessye Maurer chipped in nine kills and five digs, while junior setter Meghan Zimmerman finished with six kills, 55 assists, 12 digs and a pair of aces.

Junior libero Abby Moser recorded a season-high 25 digs, with senior Heather Hargadine adding 13 of her own.

The Bulldogs – who have had four of their five losses come to teams ranked Nos. 3-6 in the nation at the time of the match – return to the floor on Friday night for its GLVC home opener. Truman will face Illinois Springfield (3-6, 1-1 GLVC) at 7:00 pm in Pershing Arena.
