GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - - Junior Allie Brak averaged 4.50 kills per set, while Ali Patterson added 18 total kills and hit .324 as the 16th-ranked Truman volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one at the Grand Valley State Classic.

The Bulldogs (1-1) lost in three sets to No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State before holding off Saint Leo (Fla.) 3-2 in the nightcap to split the first day of the 2013 season.

The day's first match was one of the classic's top-billed showdowns, pitting the Bulldogs and Mustangs in a re-match of last season's NCAA Div. II Central regional first-round. While SMSU walked away with a 3-0 (-23, 27-25, -20) victory, the Bulldogs had their chances, as the match featured 22 ties and double-figure lead changes. Brak led all players with 16 kills, while Abby Moser added 19 digs on the back line.

Then, in the finale, Truman hit .270 and dealt 14 aces to hold off Saint Leo 3-2 (-20, 19-25, 19-25, -19, 17-15). The squads traded the first four sets, before the Bulldogs appeared poised to close out the Lions in the fifth after taking a 14-9 lead. However, SLC rattled off five in a row to knot the score at 14, before Truman took three of the final four – capped by a Patterson ace – to log win number one on the season. Brak again took home top kill honors with a match-high 20, aided by Abby Heise's 15 and 11 from Patterson. Meghan Zimmerman handed out 55 assists and three aces, coming in second to Brak's five. Moser again led the Bulldogs in digs, picking up 16.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. (Central) to face Eckerd (Fla.) (1-1), before closing the event against Adelphi (N.Y.) (0-2) at 3:00 p.m. (Central).
