Bulldogs Wrap Up Weekend At Missouri Valley

MARSHALL, Mo. – Senior Colton Schmitz placed fourth and Truman wrestling finished 11th out of 18 schools at the Missouri Valley College Invitational on Saturday.

Schmitz won his first match by pin at the one minute mark but lost a 2-0 decision to Maryville (Mo.) Christian Loges in the quarterfinals. Dropping to the wrestlebacks, Schmitz reeled off three straight wins, including one by fall to reach the finals. He lost the third place match 5-1 to Tyler McMichael of Midland Lutheran.

Helmut Rentschler won three straight in the wrestlebacks before dropping a major decision to Central Missouri's Todd Brier in a rematch from their dual bout on Friday.

Devon Fenstermaker won a pair of matches in the 165-pound bracket.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday at Central Baptist (Ark.) and on Friday at the University of Central Oklahoma, both on the road.

Truman vs. UCM Dual

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Bulldog Wrestling team lost 33-12 to the University of Central Missouri on Friday afternoon to even up their conference record to 1-1 on the season. Truman returns to the mats later today at the Missouri Valley Invitational with the tournament concluding on Saturday.

Jabez Zinabu and Colton Schmitz picked up the team points for the Bulldogs, who move to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. Zinabu was a forfeit winner at 125 while Schmitz got a pin fall victory over Zeb Spicer at 157.

In a match-up of nationally-ranked wresters at 149, Central's Frank Cagnina downed Truman's Ryan Maus 13-4. Cagnina was ranked third and Maus sixth in this week's Division II rankings.
