Wrestling Recap: Truman Splits With Pair Of Iowa Schools

FAYETTE, Iowa – The Truman Wrestling team split a pair of dual matches on Thursday night. The Bulldogs defeated Waldorf (Iowa) 34-9 before a 28-17 loss to #16 Upper Iowa. The team will be in action Saturday at the Knox (Ill.) College Invitational.

The Bulldogs took eight of the ten bouts against the Waldorf Warriors to open the dual. After J.J. Dorrell was defeated 12-5 at 125, Caleb Osborn pinned Tyree Mendez at the 1:26 mark for Truman's first points.

Rafael Lopez followed with a major and Andrew Still got a first period pin. Roark Whittington, Devon Fenstermaker, Dusting McClintlock were winners by decision and Helmut Rentschler closed Truman's scoring with a second period pin fall win at 197.

The Bulldogs went back and forth against #16 Upper Iowa in a battle of regional teams.

Lincoln Monroe put the Peacocks on the board first with a 3-1 win over Dorrell but Ethan Rentschler put Truman on top with a second period pinfall win at 133.

Nationally-ranked Matt Paulus got the six points back for Upper Iowa by putting Rafael Lopez on his back with the score tied at five apiece in the second period. Paulus was a preseason number five at 133 but was wrestling at 141.

Andrew Still pulled out an overtime win 4-2 over Duane Richardson in the next match.

At 157, Jordan Rinken scored a major decision win over Truman's Roark Whittington.

The feature bout of the night was at 165 with both Devon Fenstermaker and Colbey Vance ranked in the region. Fenstermaker took a hard-fought 6-5 decision as he entered seventh to Vance's eighth in the rankings.

The Peacocks grabbed the next two matches to extend their lead to 22-12 but Helmut Rentschler scored a tech fall win at 197 to pull Truman to within five.

Logan Hopp took the walkover win at 285 to close the dual in favor of the Peacocks 28-17.
