TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - - The Truman men's basketball team stepped out of regular season play on Tuesday night to battle Div. I Indiana State in an exhibition contest and gave the Sycamores a 40-minute battle in ISU's Hulman Center. The Bulldogs were within two possessions early in the second half and kept the game within reach throughout, as ISU eventually held on for a 78-68 victory.

Playing for the second straight night without the services of both GLVC-scoring leader senior Seth Jackson and junior Cole Myers due to the flu, the Bulldogs (7-2) got 20 points from senior guard Isaac Gardner and an 11-point, 8-assist outing from senior Reed Mells. The game, which was a countable contest for ISU but an exhibition for Truman, saw Truman shoot 36% from the floor (25-for-70) – including a 34% (11-for-32) mark from three-point range.

The Bulldogs committed just seven turnovers and forced ISU into 16, with Truman turning the Sycamore miscues into 14 points. ISU made up the turnover difference on the glass, however, as ISU finished with a 49-30 edge in rebounding and out-scored the Bulldogs 40-22 in the paint. Truman grabbed 12 steals and hit 7-of-9 free throw tries.

Sophomore forward Billy Daniel added nine points and three rebounds, with fellow sophomore Cory Myers totaling nine points and five assists. Junior Andrew Vander Zwaag chipped in seven points, and sophomore Connor Erickson finished with six points.

Justin Gant led ISU (4-6) with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Devonte Brown ran a run at a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, and six assists in 29 minutes.

The Bulldogs return to Kirksville this Friday night for a 5:30 p.m. battle with Iowa Wesleyan. It will be Truman's last contest before taking nearly two full weeks off of action.
