KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman women's soccer team dictated play on Friday afternoon, as head coach Mike Cannon's squad opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 3-0 blanking of Illinois Springfield at the Bulldog Soccer Park.
 
Junior Alexis Heffernan continued her blazing start to the 2014 season, notching a goal and an assist, while both junior Tori Owens and freshman Caitlyn Stephan added insurance tallies to give the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) three quick points in league play.
 
The Truman defense clamped down on UIS' attack, limiting the Prairie Stars (2-1, 0-1 GLVC) to just two total shots, with freshman keeper Nicole Sparks needing to make just one save in 90 minutes of action.
 
Heffernan put Truman on the board in the 25th minute, when she completed the receiving end of a centering pass by freshman Kelsey Murphy – who had checked into the match only 16 seconds earlier – to score her third goal of the year. Then, in the 37th minute, Heffernan's point-blank shot was saved by the UIS keeper; however, the rebound went right to the feet of Owens, who rattled the net for a 2-0 Truman edge going to the break.
 
After a near goal by senior Lauren Seawright in the 53rd minute hit a pair of posts on two tries, Stephan got into the scoring column in her first collegiate home match when she intercepted a pass and went in for Truman's third goal in the 56th minute.
 
Both Seawright and Heffernan finished with four shots apiece to lead the Bulldogs.
 
Truman returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. when it hosts Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles dropped a 2-0 decision at Quincy to enter Sunday's match at 1-2 overall (0-1 GLVC) on the season.
