ALLENDALE, Mich. - - Two goals in a six-and-a-half minute span by junior forward Alexis Heffernan sparked the Truman women's soccer team in the first half on Friday, as the Bulldogs picked up a season-opening 2-0 win against Ferris (Mich.) State on the Grand Valley (Mich.) State campus.

The Bulldogs (1-0) outlasted a two-hour, five-minute rain and lightning delay to dominate Ferris State (0-1) across the statistical categories. Truman out-shot Ferris 20-3 overall, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.

Heffernan got things rolling in the ninth minute when she swiped a Ferris miscue and split two defenders before beating the keeper bottom left for a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 16th minute, she took a pass from Allison Lockett and scored bottom left again to put Truman ahead by two.

That would be all the Bulldogs would need against their opponent Bulldogs, as redshirt freshman Nicole Sparks picked up a one save shutout in her first collegiate contest. Six Truman players saw their first college action on Friday afternoon, including four starters, as the Bulldog program earned its first season-opening win since 2009.

"We started well with a lot of good passing and movement," head coach Mike Cannon said. "After the break, Ferris put us under pressure but didn't create a great chance. We settled down and created some good chances to close the game out in what was a solid first outing for sure."

The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Sunday, taking on No. 1 GVSU at 1 p.m. (CT). Links to live stats and video will be available at TrumanBulldogs.com.
