ALLENDALE, Mich. - - The Truman women's soccer team came up short against the NCAA Div. II's No. 1 team on Sunday afternoon, as the top-ranked Grand Valley (Mich.) State Lakers earned a 3-0 home win against the Bulldogs to level Truman's season record at 1-1.

The Lakers (2-0), last season's national champions, put Truman in an early hole when Gabbie Guibord scored an unassisted sixth-minute goal to put GVSU up, 1-0. Charlie Socia would add a tally in the 40th minute, sending the teams to the half at 2-0.

GVSU's Alyssa Wesley scored the game's third goal in the 68th minute, converting on the back end of a Marti Corby corner kick.

The Bulldogs had their chances as well throughout the contest by putting five shots on goal. Truman took seven shots overall, getting two apiece from Megan Frkovic and Alexis Heffernan.

"Grand Valley is an excellent test for us to see what the top level of Division II looks like and what we need to work on to keep climbing in the right direction," head coach Mike Cannon said. "We created a few great chances but didn't finish. Overall, I'm very pleased with our progress to this point, and we're ready for GLVC action to start at home on Friday."

Nicole Sparks made 10 saves in net for the Bulldogs, who return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, with the home opener against Illinois Springfield. Kickoff in the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest is set for 1 p.m.
