Volleyball Grounds Ashland in Five-Set Thriller

AURORA, Ill. - - In a match that needed extra points in a fifth set to be decided, the Truman volleyball team picked up a key regional victory in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader by defeating Ashland (Ohio), 3-2, at the 2015 Midwest Regional Crossover.

The Bulldogs (13-6) and Eagles (13-6) split the first four sets, with Truman taking the first two sets by 25-19 and 25-22 scores and Ashland winning three and four by 26-24 and 25-18 tallies.

However, the fifth set was back-and-forth throughout, with 14 ties and nine lead changes between the teams. After Truman held match point at 14-13, the Eagles flipped the script and scored two straight to take its own one-point lead at 15-14. Kayla Bastian then mashed her 21st kill of the night and followed it up with a service ace to give the Bulldogs a 16-15 edge, but an AU kill knotted the set at 16-all.

Ali Patterson notched her ninth kill for 17-16, before an Eagle attack error gave Truman the match at 18-16.

The Bulldogs hit .231 for the match with 59 kills and 22 errors on 160 total swings. Bastian's 21 kills led all Bulldogs, as the junior hit .360 to go with 17 digs, a team-high three aces, and two aces. Jasmine Brown added 12 kills and two aces, while Patterson (nine kills; .467 attack percentage; two blocks) and Emilee Walters (seven kills, seven block assists) also reached double-digit points with 10.5 apiece.

Lacey Hill finished with five kills, two solo blocks and two block assists, while Abby Heise had four kills, 25 assists, two aces, 10 digs, and four block assists as part of a full box score. Sadie Pafford's 24 digs led all players and set a new career-high.

Now 2-0 at the Crossover after a win earlier in the day against Tiffin, the Bulldogs will look to sweep the event at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 17) when they face Hillsdale (Mich.).
