Bulldog men top century mark in home opener

KIRKSVILLE - - The Truman men's basketball team scored the first 24 points of the game, keeping visiting Central Christian (Mo.) off the board for nearly seven full minutes on the way to a 102-52 home victory on Wednesday night in Pershing Arena.
 
The Bulldogs (2-1) shot 64.7% from the floor in the first half and 56.5% (39-for-69) for the game to hand Central Christian (3-1) its first loss of the 2015-16 season. Freshman Jake Velky led all players with 24 points off the bench, hitting 9-of-13 shots, while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists. He also tied for the Bulldog-high with three steals in 25 minutes of action off the bench. Redshirt freshman Jack Green scored 18 points and added six rebounds of his own, while junior Kyle Kanaskie scored 11 points in 15 minutes to also finish in double-figures.
 
All 11 Bulldogs that were in the scorebook put points on the board on the night, while the Truman defense held the Saints to just 31.7% overall from the field. Truman out-rebounded CCCB 43-29 and turned 23 Saint miscues into 32 points on the other end. The Bulldogs also out-scored Central Christian by a 54-16 line in the paint.
 
CCCB got a game-high 14 points from Shomari Wellington, and nine points and five assists from DuJuan Henderson.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (Nov. 21) night, traveling to Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa, for a 7 p.m. (CST) tipoff against the Peacocks.
