Wrestling Splits Opening Night In Fayette

FAYETTE, Iowa – The Bulldog Wrestling team split a pair of dual matches in the kickoff to their 2015-16 season on Thursday night. Truman downed Waldorf 41-6 in the opener but lost 34-7 to host Upper Iowa. The team will return to action on Saturday at the Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational.

In the season's opening dual with Waldorf, the Bulldogs won the first five matches, two by forfeit in downing Waldorf 41-5. J.J. Dorrell got things started with an 8-4 decision at 125. Dorrell scored the final three points in the final period getting an escape followed by a takedown.

Rafael Lopez won by tech fall at 141. He had an early takedown then scored four near fall points before Major Heggs escaped. The four near fall points is a new addition to college wrestling this season. Lopez scored two more four-point near falls in the second period to win 18-2.

Roark Whittington scored a 7-4 win at 157 and Dustin McClintock was awarded a disqualification win at 174. Luke Bornhop picked up the first pin of the season by putting Ryan Dugger down at the 5:44 mark.

The Peacocks won eight straight matches before a pair of freshman scored their first Truman wins. Sam Reeves used a second period escape to propel himself to a 6-1 win at 197. Austin Dovin got a reversal to start period two then scored two, two-point near falls en route to a 13-2 major decision win.
