Heffernan Named NSCAA Women's Soccer All-American

Women's Soccer | 12/4/2015 8:20:00 AM

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - For the first time since 2009, the Truman State University women's soccer program will add an NSCAA Div. II all-American to its record book, as senior midfielder Alexis Heffernan became the eighth Bulldog in program history to be named to the nation's top set of teams.

Heffernan (ANKENY, Iowa / Ankeny HS) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's third-team late Thursday night, as the senior joins a short list of Bulldog elites to earn one of the top individual honors awarded to NCAA Div. II players each season. She becomes the first Bulldog since Katie Reuck in 2009 to be named an NSCAA all-American.

For her career, Heffernan will leave her mark on the program's all-time goals, points, and total shots categories, as she scored 26 goals (eighth all-time), tallied 64 points (ninth all-time), and took 228 shots (fourth all-time) in 78 contests. In total, 14 of her 26 goals were game-winners, including five of her seven this season. She was named to the Great Lakes Valley Conference first-team for the second straight season early in November before adding both first-team all-region accolades by both the NSCAA and the Conference Commissioner's Association (CCA).

Heffernan becomes the eighth player added to the program's all-American list, which includes Reuck, Sara Murray (2003, 2004), Anna Sonderman (2004), Lauren Davis (2004), Jennifer Buscher (2001, 2002), Emily Huyck (2001), and Jocelyn Parisi (1997). All eight have been named to the NSCAA all-America lists under the guidance of head coach Mike Cannon.

Just three players from the GLVC earned NSCAA all-American honors this season, with Heffernan joining Bellarmine's Mary Beth Gorham and Quincy's Ashley Burton.

Truman finished the 2015 season with a 15-3-5 overall record and reached the second round of the NCAA Div. II tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Cedarville (Ohio), 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA tournament before falling by the same score to sub-region host Bellarmine in the second round.

The NSCAA all-America selections will be recognized at the annual all-America luncheon, held during the 2016 NSCAA convention in Baltimore on Saturday, Jan. 16.
