EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – The Truman Baseball team had to hold on but in the end they earned a four-game GLVC series sweep over fifth-ranked and defending national champion Southern Indiana on Monday by a 10-7 score.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-1 lead but watched as the Screaming Eagles stormed back to 9-7 heading into the ninth.

Brendan Trimble got a clutch two-out RBI single that scored Dave Gambino for an insurance run in the top half of the ninth. In USI's last at bat, the Screaming Eagles put two on with one out but Austin Tinsley got a fly out to left and a foul out on the leadoff hitter Kyle Kempf to preserve the victory.

It was Truman's first conference series sweep since 2004 when they took three against Southwest Baptist as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The offense remained on fire as Truman knocked around USI pitching for 14 hits on the day. Gambino extended his 13-game hitting streak with a pair of hits and two runs scored while Paul Trenhaile moved to a 12-game hitting streak going 2-for-5 at the dish with three more RBIs. Trenhaile finished the series hitting .500 (9-of-18) with four runs scored, a double, home run and eight RBIs.

Truman jumped out on top with three runs in the top of the first. Zak Larkin, who went 3-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases, singled to start things off. Jarod Hahn singled and Trenhaile brought them both home with a double to center. Trenhaile later scored on single by Blake Deaton.

USI got one back in the bottom of the inning off starter Alex Hoffmann. Trent Gunn picked up the first of his four hits in the game with an RBI single to left. However, the Screaming Eagles left two on base with two straight groundouts.

The Bulldogs added four more in the third with an RBI double by Hahn, RBI single by Deaton and a two-run double by Chris Illiopoulos.

Truman led 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh when USI staged a comeback. The Screaming Eagles got four singles to push across three runs and chase Hoffmann from the hill. Sam Reuter put out the fire by retiring the next three hitters to keep it 8-5.

Illiopoulos drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and Tyler Hill pinch ran. Hill stole second and got Truman's four run lead back when he crossed the plate on Larkin's two-out single.

Southern Indiana would score twice more in their half of the eighth with back-to-back doubles by Matt Chavarria and Trent Gunn with two outs but Tinsley struck out Tyler Mikrut to end the inning.

Hoffmann improved to 2-0 on the season and Tinsley recorded the four-out save for his third of the year.

Truman will open up their home season on Saturday when they welcome McKendree (Ill.) University for a four-game series starting at noon.
