Tennis Recap: William Jewell Downs Bulldog Tennis

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Bulldog Tennis teams fell to William Jewell on Saturday. The men lost an epic 5-4 decision while the women lost 8-1 to the Cardinals. Truman will host Drury (Mo.) and Rockhurst (Mo.) next Friday and Saturday.

The Truman men led 2-1 after doubles with Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith winning 8-4 and Matt Peterson and Paul Province taking an 8-6 win at number three.

Ohlhausen won number one singles 6-3, 6-0 and Province took number four 7-5, 6-0.

William Jewell earned straight set wins at number three, five and six to tie the score at four apiece.

The number two singles match between Smith and Amery Clews was decided in a tie-break after each one claimed a set. Clews won set one 6-4 while Smith dominated set two 6-1. Smith fought off 13 match points in the tie break only to fall 15-13 to take the final team point.

Marisa Thome and Kim Birenbaum got the Bulldog women off to a good start by taking number one doubles by an 8-4 score. However the Cardinals rebounded with 8-3 and 8-5 wins to lead 2-1 heading into singles.

Singles proved to be the strong suit for the Cardinals as they won all six, five by straight sets. Thome forced a tie-break set at number three before falling 6-3, 0-6, 10-6.
