Saturday's Recap

LIBERTY, Mo.  – Two more "white knuckle" games were played between the Truman Bulldogs and William Jewell Cardinals on Sunday. The Bulldogs held on for a 6-4 win in the opener but the Cardinals got their second walk-off win in the finale 5-4 to split the four-game series. The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday in another crucial GLVC series with the Quincy (Ill.) Hawks at home.

In the eight games played between the two teams over the past two years, there have been five games decided by just one run and the other three decided by no more than three runs.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs got five home runs in the two games with three off the bat of Jarod Hahn. Zak Larkin, Paul Trenhaile, Dave Gambino joined Hahn with three hits on the day. Trenhaile extended his hitting streak to 21-games and closed to within five hits of Truman's career hit record of 197.

Game 1 Recap: Jarod Hahn became the 15th player in Truman history with multiple home runs in a game as his two blasts powered the Bulldogs to a 6-4 win in the opener. Hahn hit a two-run homer in a three-run third inning and then hit another two-run shot in the fifth that stood up to be the game winner.

Kent Frantz won his fifth straight decision to remain perfect on the year while Austin Tinsley moved just one save off the single-season record notching his fourth by getting the final two outs in the seventh.

Zak Larkin drew a one out walk in the third and Hahn turned around a Preston Felgate pitch to put Truman up 2-0. Paul Trenhaile followed with a single to extend his hitting streak to 20 games then came in on a sac fly by Blake Deaton.

The Cardinals got a run back in the third and tied things up with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Hahn broke the tie in the fifth. Larkin led off with a walk off new pitcher Chris Mancha followed by Hahn who belted his sixth home run of the season. It is the most home runs by a Bulldog in a season since Neil Bleish in 2008.

Dave Gambino got in on the long ball action in the seventh with his third of the season and 22nd RBI to make it 6-3.

Franz allowed a leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh and was lifted after the run scored on a groundout. Tinsley walked the first batter he faced but got a ground ball out to second and a foul out to end the game facing the third and fourth hitters in the William Jewell line-up.

Game 2 Recap: The Cardinals overcame a 4-2 lead in the late innings to gain the doubleheader split 5-4. The tying and winning runs were scored in the bottom of the ninth with one out.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by Hahn and Trenhaile in the top of the first inning.

The lead expanded to three after Zak Larkin led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly to right by Trenhaile.
Truman wasted a leadoff double by T.J. Wood in the fifth and the Cardinals got two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a bases clearing double by Luke Lucchetti.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the sixth when Chris Beckmann scored on a wild pitch.

Alex Hoffmann maneuvered his way through six innings before giving way to Peter Young in the seventh. Young retired the Cardinals in order but gave up a leadoff home run to Lucchetti to start the eighth.

Truman stranded two more runners in scoring positon in the top of the ninth leaving Chris Iliopoulos and Zak Larkin on second and third as Hahn struck out swinging.

In the bottom of the ninth, Austin Tinsely was summoned again and retired the first batter he faced on a fly out. He hit Coleman Waheed then Andrew Miller singled to put the winning run on. Jesse Gray pinch ran for Miller. Bryan Rezin singled to tie the game at four. Brian Porting then got the winning RBI as he grounded into a fielder's choice with Gray scoring the run at the plate.

Tinsley got saddled with his third loss of the year and second on the weekend.
