GM 1: vs Southern Indiana Recap (Thursday)

WESTFIELD, Ind.  – The Truman Baseball team was dealt a pair of 6-4 setbacks on Friday and eliminated for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Postseason Tournament. The Bulldogs finish the regular season 31-20 and will now await word from the NCAA on a possible selection to the Division II National Tournament.

The Bulldogs were third in the last regional poll that was released on Wednesday with the top six teams earning selection into the Midwest Regional field. Two bids will be taken by conference tournament champions one from the GLVC and the other from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference which will leave four "at-large" bids available. If selected, it will mark the first time in program history that the Truman Baseball team will advance to the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA Selection Show will air at 9 p.m. on Sunday night at NCAA.com.

Truman's GLVC run came to an abrupt end with two losses on Friday. The Bulldogs were sent into the elimination side of the bracket following a 6-4 loss at the hands of Quincy (Ill.) University, then after five straight wins over the defending Division II champions, Southern Indiana exacted some revenge by ending the tournament run for Truman by the same 6-4 score.

Quincy Game Recap: Dominic Miles went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs as the Hawks fought back from an early deficit to down the Bulldogs.

Truman scored two runs out of the gate as Zak Larkin came in on a poor throw to the plate following Paul Trenhaile's steal of second. With runners on second and third, Michael Venturella singled to left scoring Trenhaile but Dave Gambino was thrown out at the plate putting the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.

Kent Frantz gave up a leadoff single in the first but got Kory Wisdom to hit into the tailor-made double-play to end the threat.

Ryan Snyder started the second with a solo home run to right to cut Truman's lead to 2-1 and the three straight hits following the homer tied the game at two.

In the third, Brynn Martinez and David Jacob both doubled and Miles hit an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Truman got a two-out rally going in the sixth as Gambino reached on an infield single. Chris Iliopoulos followed with a hit to right and Venturella went up the middle to score Gambino to make it 4-3.

The Hawks got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth as Miles singled and later scored on a single from Peter Cunningham.

Both teams exchange runs in the eighth. Trenhaile singled and Gambino doubled to make it second and third with one out. Iliopoulos grounded out scoring Trenhaile but Venturella lined out to short to end the inning.

Miles struck again for Quincy in their half. His two-out home run on the first pitch gave the Hawks their two-run lead back.

T.J. Wood singled with two outs in the ninth but Larkin's fly out ended the game.

Tommy Hager got the win to improve to 6-0 on the season after he went seven innings and struck out six. Teddy Rule followed three Quincy relievers to the mound to earn his 12th save of the season.

Frantz lost his second straight decision pitching eight innings and allowing all six runs on 12 hits. He falls to 8-2 on the season.

Southern Indiana Recap: A five-run fourth inning enabled the Screaming Eagles to finally break their Truman hex and five-game losing streak to the Bulldogs in 2015. Trent Gunn and Andrew Cope each hit home runs for USI while Tyler Nichols allowed six hits and struck out eight to stave off elimination.

Nichols mowed through the Bulldog lineup the first time around without allowing a base runner. However after the first two were retired in the fourth, a fielding error opened the door for the Bulldogs to strike first. Paul Trenhaile reached on the error by the shortstop and Dave Gambino following with the team's first hit. Chris Iliopoulos got the RBI single through the left side to put Truman ahead 1-0.

Mark Roberts got the nod for the Bulldogs and allowed one hit through his first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. A leadoff walk, single and a sac bunt put runners in scoring position for Sam Griggs to strike the first blow of the game with a two-run double to right center. Ryan Bertram singled in Griggs and Cope chased Roberts by hitting a home run to right for the 5-1 lead.

Gunn added a solo home run in the fifth to extend the lead out to 6-1.

The Bulldogs tried to fight back. In the sixth, Blake Deaton started a rally with a single to center and Trenhaile followed with an infield hit. Gambino singled through the right side and an error allowed two runs to score cutting the lead in half. Iliopoulos brought in Gambino on a fielder's choice but Jarod Hahn struck out ending the inning.

Truman brought the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and eighth innings but could not get the equalizers.

Nichols sent the Bulldogs down in order with a pair of strikeouts to end the game and improve to 5-4 on the season.

Trenhaile and Gambino both had a pair of hits as Roberts suffered his second loss of the season. Alex Hoffmann allowed the home run in the fifth and Peter Young pitched a scoreless eighth for the Bulldogs.
