Season Stats

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman State University men's basketball team shot 58% from the field, including hitting 15-of-25 overall in the second half, to register a season sweep of William Jewell on Thursday night, dispatching the Cardinals by a 98-83 score in Pershing Arena.

Junior Billy Daniel scored a career-high 27 points, hitting 8-of-12 from the field and 11-of-13 from the foul line, while four other Bulldogs finished in double-figures. Redshirt senior Andrew Vander Zwaag scored 17 points and hit four three-pointers as part of a 12-of-22 (54.5%) night from distance for the 'Dogs. With the win, Truman improves to 18-8 overall on the season (10-6 GLVC) and remains one game back of both Lewis and Quincy (both 11-5) for the No. 5 seed in the upcoming GLVC tournament. The Bulldogs clinched – at minimum – a first-round home game on Sunday, Feb. 28 with the victory on Thursday night against William Jewell, who falls to 8-16 overall (3-13 GLVC).

The game featured three ties and two lead changes, but those mostly came early, as Truman closed the half on an 11-4 run to take a 48-37 lead into the break. After the Cardinals cut the lead to as little as six with 10:42 to play, the Bulldogs blasted off again – scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take a 71-57 lead at the 8:28 mark of the game.

The lead dropped to eight with 2:59 to play, but strong free throw shooting down the stretch iced the game for the purple and white, as the 84-76 lead ballooned to 18 with just 1:05 to play en route to the 98-83 final score.

Senior Cole Myers added 12 points and a team-best six rebounds, while junior Kyle Kanaskie (11) and redshirt junior Dwight Sistrunk, Jr., added 10 points as well. Redshirt junior Cory Myers scored nine points but finished with a game-high six assists and four steals. Truman forced 17 William Jewell turnovers, turning those mistakes into 26 points on the offensive end, while handing out 19 assists on 33 made baskets.

Darius Tomlin led WJC with 25 points and three steals, while Larry Fitzgerald added 17 points.

The Bulldogs head to Kansas City to tussle with Rockhurst (12-12, 7-9 GLVC) on Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon at 3 p.m. Earlier this season, the Hawks defeated Truman 78-72 in the GLVC opener on Dec. 3, 2015, in Pershing Arena, but the Hawks are coming off a 79-74 home defeat to QU on Thursday night.
