The First Pitch:
The first half of GLVC play will see the Truman Baseball team travel to Missouri S&T for a critical four-game conference series this weekend. The Bulldogs are a game out of a four-way tie for first place in the West Division with Missouri S&T one of those teams Truman is chasing. Truman is 6-6 in conference having split each of the previous three league weekends while the Miners are 7-5 after taking three of four from Drury and splitting their last two series against Quincy and Rockhurst.

It will be a series of "cat and mouse" with both teams atop the GLVC in stolen bases. Truman leads the league with 56 thefts in 76 attempts while S&T is second with 53 steals in 77 attempts. T.J. Wood leads the conference with 19 steals and the Miners' Eli Miller is second with 16. On the other side of the ledger, the Miners have allowed 41 steals and a 35% caught stealing percentage while Truman has allowed 21 stolen bases and have caught 40% of potential base stealers.

Players to Watch:
For the Bulldogs, junior shortshop Nick Agliolo is ninth in the GLVC in hitting with a .398 batting average and seventh in on-base percentage at .482. He is tied for ninth in hits with 45 and had a 15-game hitting streak to start the season. Freshman right fielder Mason King is second on the team with 12 stolen bases and has reached base in 17 straight games. Sophomore left fielder Adam Gregorich is hitting .351 and junior first baseman Dave Gambino is hitting .310 and tied with Agliolo for the team lead in RBIs with 25.

Last week's starting pitchers with wins, juniors Alex Hoffmann and Tyler Spencer, lead the staff in fewest walks issued. Both Hoffmann (4-1) and Spencer (2-2) have walked six batters apiece. Sophomore Kent Frantz (2-4) has 33 Ks to lead the staff and three complete games.

Sophomore closer Peter Young holds the career saves record (14) and holds the single-season saves record at eight this year. He is third in the GLVC in saves behind Missouri-St. Louis' Austin Simokaitis (11) and the University of Indianapolis' Dylan Stutsman (9).

For the Miners, Eli Miller is fourth in the GLVC in hitting at .420 on the season. Miller has six doubles, a triple and 22 RBIs and leads the Miners in stolen bases with 16. Nick Ulrich is batting .354 and paces the Miners with 11 doubles, five home runs and 33 RBIs.

S&T has a team ERA of 4.39 with starter Aaron Bedsworth one win off the conference lead with a 6-2 record and is sixth in the GLVC in strikeouts with 46. Bedsworth has started eight games and has a 2.81 ERA.

Last Year vs. Missouri S&T:
The Bulldogs took three of four from the Miners in Kirksville last year but Mother Nature was another plotline in the series. Game one of the set saw almost four hours of delays due to lighting and rain. After an hour plus delay at the start, Truman scored six runs in the bottom of the first but after the Miners tied it at 7 in the top of the fifth, Truman grabbed an 8-7 lead in their half of the inning.  The two teams waited out a two hour and 30 minute delay in the seventh before the Bulldogs held on to the 8-7 victory.

Dave Gambino's walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh off of Aaron Bedsworth gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory in game two. The Miners took the lead in the top of the seventh with two outs but Paul Trenhaile singled in the bottom of the seventh and Gambino followed with fourth HR of the season to make Kent Frantz a seven-game winner.

With the series pushed to Monday because of rain, current Miners pitching coach and former Bulldog starter scattered five hits in earning a complete-game 6-0 victory in game three. Cody Gardner shutout the Miners with allowing five hits and three walks with 15 ground ball outs and Gambino drove in two in the Truman win.

The Bulldogs could not get the sweep as the Miners put up a 5-spot in the third inning and led 6-0 before prevailing in the series finale 6-2.Keith Coulson got the win for S&T and Reed Brown was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
