Cardinals Deal Bulldog Tennis Two Tough Losses

Women's Match: William Jewell 7, Truman 2
Men's Match: William Jewell 5, Truman 4

LIBERTY, Mo. – William Jewell took two from the Truman Bulldogs on the tennis courts Friday. The Cardinal men edged out the Truman men 5-4 while William Jewell women defeated the Bulldog women 7-2. Truman returns to action on Saturday at Rockhurst in another GLVC match.

Truman men led 2-1 following doubles with Ryan Bunselmeyer and Matt Peterson winning 8-3 at number one and Paul Province and Gavin Hatter taking number two by the same score.

The dual hinged on three singles matches. At number one, Marc Gartner held off a rally by Bunselmeyer to win in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Marco Martinez defeated Brian Lavalle in straight sets but by scores of 7-5, 7-5.

Number five was a nail biter. Griffin Turnage took the first set 4-6 but Jacob Plant fought off the loss by winning set two 7-6 (8-6) before completing the comeback with a 6-2 win the tie breaking set.

The Cardinals were able to sweep the Bulldogs in doubles as Lauren Huddlestun and Savannah Drew took an 8-5 decision over Marisa Thome and Lindsey Schlichting and Clair Mackay and Hannah Waine won a hard fought 9-7 decision over Savannah Everett and Elise Mousseau.

Thome and Schlichting exacted a small bit of revenge with singles wins. Thome won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at number two over Drew and Schlichting won 6-0, 6-4 over Mackay. Two other singles matches needed a third set before being decided with Lauren Jin falling 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 at number one and Holly Cantalupo dropping a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 match at number four.
