RECAP: Wrestling Splits First Two GLVC Duals

RESULTS (PDF)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A historic day of wrestling took place in Pershing Arena as the Great Lakes Valley Conference began league dual action for the first time ever. The Bulldogs split their two duals with the University of Indianapolis and Bellarmine University.

Truman squared off with the nationally-ranked Greyhounds from UINDY in the first match of the day. The Bulldogs got off to a terrific start as J.J. Dorrell was a 7-5 winner of D.J. Smith and Caleb Osborn won 7-1 over Joe Kieffer at 133.

Rafael Lopez rallied with a take down in the waning seconds of the match to force overtime against Andrew Frey at 141 but Frey got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard with an early takedown in the sudden victory period to win 6-4. Lopez's takedown made it 4-3 however Frey had earned the extra point for having over a minute of advantage time accumulated in the bout.

Kyle Barkovich and Heath Lange picked up nine points for UINDY with wins via fall and tech fall.

Truman's Dustin McClintock scored a pin fall win at 165 to close the gap to 14-12. The match was hotly contested with JD Waters having the advantage over McClintock until the Bulldog reversal the hold and scored the pin with 13 seconds left in the first period.

Brendon Kelly won the next match by tech fall and the Greyhounds won the final four matches, two by pin to take the dual from Truman 34-12.

Truman was given the first 12 points in their dual with Bellarmine as the Knights were open at 125 and 133. Lopez won 6-4 to make it 15-0 and Ethan Rentschler rallied for an overtime 12-10 win to make it 18-0 Truman.

The Knights would win the next five matches to take a 19-18 lead over the Bulldogs as the dual came down to the 285-pound match.

Ashton Mutuwa gave up over 80 pounds to his opponent Daniel Sheridan but Mutuwa earned the victory in the match 6-3 and gave Truman the dual win 21-19.

In the other two duals contested in Pershing Arena, UINDY downed Drury 34-6 while the Panthers defeated Bellarmine 34-21.

Truman has a road match at Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday before resuming GLVC action with duals at Maryville and McKendree on Friday and Saturday.
