NOTES: Road Trip Looms For Truman Women's Soccer

UW-Parkside/Lewis

Postseason may not officially begin until October 29 for the Truman Women's Soccer team but it has begun with the importance of matches down the stretch. The Bulldogs play their final two regular season contest this weekend on the road and need positive results to secure a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.

The Bulldogs will travel to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (2-10-2/1-8-2 GLVC) on Friday afternoon for a noon match and then head south to Lewis University (5-6-2/4-5-2 GLVC) in Romeoville, Illinois for a Sunday contest.

Truman celebrated Senior Day by snapping a five-game winless streak and scoring a pair of games in the process during the 2-0 win over the University of Indianapolis. The Bulldogs had only one goal during the five-game streak but got tallies from Isabel Kurzban and Sam Bibee in the win.

The GLVC Tournament picture is as clear as mud with nine teams having over .500 winning percentages and two more over .450.  Quincy (10-1), McKendree (7-1-3) and Maryville (6-2-3) are the frontrunners for the first three spots while spots four through nine are separated by percentage points. The Bulldogs are tied with Illinois Springfield for sixth place and drew with the Prairie Stars earlier this season.

The Bulldogs are 5-3-1 all time against the Rangers with the only tie in the series coming last year in Kenosha 1-1. UWP has one win in their last 10 matches and have been outscored 21 to five for the season.

The Flyers handed the Bulldogs their only conference loss last year as Lewis scored twice in the second half for a 2-0 win over Truman.  Lewis has one win in their last six contest with that being a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Parkside.

CAREER LOOKOUTS…Katie Mattingly is third on Truman's career keeper minutes played list with 6,562.50, only Lauren Davis (6,865) and Jenny Miller (6,850) have played more minutes in the cage for the Bulldogs…Mattingly is tied for second on the all-time shutouts list with 39 with Jenny Miller, she is four back of the career leader Emily Huyck (43)…Mattingly in second in active Division II keepers in shutouts and fifth among all NCAA keepers…Allison Lockett is the active career leader in goals (12), assists (11), points (35) and games played (75).

QUICK GOALS…Twice this season, Truman has scored consecutive goals within a minute of each other. On September 17 against Rockhurst, Allison Lockett scored two goals in a span of 29 seconds, which is most likely, a Bulldog record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same player. Locket was again part of a quick turnaround on September 24 when the Isabel Kurzban scored at the 50:47 mark and Lockett added a goal 32 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.

GLVC WEEKLY AWARDS…Senior midfielder Allison Lockett was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after her two goals, one assist performance against Rockhurst on September 17. It was the first POW award for the Bulldogs this season and first in the career for Lockett. Katie Mattingly won five defensive players of the week awards last season and Kelsey Murphy was an offensive player of the week on September 19 last year.

HALL OF FAME HONORS FOR MURRAY…The Bulldogs all-time leader in all offensive categories was inducted into the Truman Athletics Hall of Fame last week. Sara Murray (2001-04) helped lead dominating Bulldog teams to four MIAA Championships and for NCAA Tournament appearances while earning the program's first, first-team All-America honor.

AROUND THE GLVC…As noted above, the Quincy Hawks have taken control of the GLVC with an 10-1 conference record. They have locked up the number one seed for the GLVC Tournament. The top eight teams in the conference will qualify for the league tournament that begins at the end of the season.

GLVC Individual Leaders…Sydnee Carroll of McKendree leads the league in scoring with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Zoe Brochu of McKendree has allowed the fewest goals with a 0.27 goals-against average.

ACADEMIC HONORS…Mattingly was named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American (Second Team) last season as was the fourth Bulldog to earn that honor. In addition, 21 players on the 2016 roster earned the Academic All-GLVC award, meaning they posted at least a 3.30 GPA for the academic year.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD…The Truman Women's Soccer team earned the GLVC Sportsmanship Award from the conference coaches last season. They joined Football, Baseball, Women's Cross Country and Swimming to earn team awards for Truman and helped the school earn their first ever conference overall sportsmanship award.

UP NEXT…The Bulldogs will have their conference bye as they will be the only team on the sidelines when the regular season comes to a close on Wednesday. After those matches are sorted out, the GLVC will announce the bracket for the conference tournament with seeds one through four hosting seeds five through eight in a match on Sunday. The winners advance to Indianapolis for the semifinals and finals.
