NOTES: Truman Women Return To GLVC Tournament Sunday

GLVC Quarterfinals vs. Maryville

The field has been set and the Truman Women's Soccer team will travel to Maryville University for the quarterfinals of the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament on Sunday. Match time is slated for a noon kickoff.

The Bulldogs are the number six seed in the bracket after a 6-4-4 conference record while the Saints are the third seed after going 7-4-3 in league play. The winner will move on to the semifinals at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis and face the winner of the Indianapolis and McKendree match.

Truman is 6-3-1 all-time against Maryville on the pitch with a 3-1-1 tally in games played under the GLVC banner. The Saints downed the Bulldogs 1-0 on September 29 in Kirksville as Caite Huesgen scored her third goal of the season with 15 minutes left to play. Truman outshot Maryville 13-6 overall and 7-3 on goal but Maryville keeper Alison Riddle recorded the shutout in the victory.

Truman is unbeaten in their last three matches with two wins and a tie. The Bulldogs defeated Indianapolis on October 15 at home 2-0 and UW-Parkside on the road last Friday 1-0. They played to a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Lewis University with Paige Peterson scoring both Bulldog goals.

Maryville has won once in their last five matches, scoring three goals in the process. They were defeated at home on Wednesday afternoon by Indianapolis by a score of 3-0. The Saints defeated second-seeded McKendree 1-0 on Sunday but had two losses and a tie in the three games prior to that.

If the match ends in a tie, advancement to the semifinals will be determined by a shootout. The Bulldogs advanced in 2015 in a shootout win over Quincy in the semifinals but lost in a shootout last year in the semis to McKendree. Truman has been awarded one penalty kick this season with Jen Seithel converting in a 3-0 win over Drury on September 22 while Missouri S&T converted on the lone PK against the Bulldogs on September 24. Maryville has not been awarded a PK this season and allowed one against Minnesota Crookston on September 3.

BULLDOG TOURNAMENT HISTORY…Truman has been in a conference postseason tournament all eight times in which one was offered by a league. They have been in the GLVC tournament since joining in 2013 and have advanced to the semifinals in the four previous tournaments with a championship in 2015. Truman was also a tournament champion in the MIAA following the 2007 season. In the past four GLVC quarterfinal rounds, Truman has defeated William Jewell (2-1), Drury 1-0, Rockhurst 2-1 and Southern Indiana 2-0. This is Maryville's first ever trip to the GLVC Postseason Tournament.

BULLDOG OFFENSIVE TIDBITS…Truman has a trio of three goal scorers to lead the team this season. Sophomore Isabel Kurzban, senior Allison Lockett and freshman Paige Peterson all have three goals apiece and one assists for seven points. Senior Kelsey Murphy and freshman Hanna Hickey both have two assists. Truman has had 11 goal scorers this year with the only other Bulldog will more than one goal is junior Jen Seithel. Truman has 177 total shots this season with Kurzban leading the way with 35. Opponents have one fewer total shots at 176 but 18 fewer shots on goal than Truman at 89 to 71.

BULLDOG DEFENSE…The backline of the Bulldogs has allowed 13 goals this season on 71 shots on goal. This was after Truman allowed only seven goals in 2016 that matched a school record. The defense in anchored by a pair of first-team all-conference performers from last season, junior center back Laura Ney and senior Caity Schmitt. Ney has played all 1,495 minutes this season and all minutes played during the 2016 season (1,970). Ney has four career goals and 12 shots on goal in the past three seasons. Schmitt will be playing in her 80th match for the Bulldogs and has seen over 7,000 minutes on the field over the past four years. They are joined in the starting 11 by freshman Camryn Sprague.

BETWEEN THE PIPES…A staple in the Bulldog net for the past four years has been senior Katie Mattingly. She was the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year last season and two-time all-conference honoree. Mattingly was a CoSIDA Academic All-American last year as well. As a starter, Mattingly is 42-13-15 with a 0.53 goals against average and 41 career shutouts. Mattingly is 88 minutes shy of second on the all-time goalkeeper minutes played list and 103 from the overall record held by Lauren Davis. Her 41 shutouts is second on the career lists, two behind Hall of Famer Emily Huyck's record of 43. Mattingly is second in active Division II keepers in shutouts and fifth across all three NCAA divisions.

QUICK GOALS…Twice this season, Truman has scored consecutive goals within a minute of each other. On September 17 against Rockhurst, Allison Lockett scored two goals in a span of 29 seconds, which is most likely, a Bulldog record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same player. Locket was again part of a quick turnaround on September 24 when the Isabel Kurzban scored at the 50:47 mark and Lockett added a goal 32 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.

GLVC WEEKLY AWARDS…Senior midfielder Allison Lockett was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after her two goals, one assist performance against Rockhurst on September 17. It was the first POW award for the Bulldogs this season and first in the career for Lockett. Katie Mattingly won five defensive players of the week awards last season and Kelsey Murphy was an offensive player of the week on September 19 last year.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS…Maryville is 8-5-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the GLVC…The Saints have scored 20 goals this year on 97 shots on goal. Alex Johnson leads the team with four goals and has 13 points. Caite Huesgen has four goals and two assists and Allison Verville has three goals and six assists for 12 points. Keeper Alison Riddle has started 14 of the 16 games and has a 1.04 goals against average. She has five shutouts.

AROUND THE GLVC…Quincy University is the top seed in the tournament and will host #8 Illinois Springfield. The two teams met on Sunday with the Hawks coming back from two goals down to defeat the Prairie Stars 3-2. McKendree is the number two seed and will host Indianapolis and Bellarmine is the number four seed and will host Southern Indiana. All four matches will be available for viewing on the GLVC Sports Network.

GLVC Individual Leaders…Mackenzie Rief of Quincy won the regular season scoring title in the GLVC with 10 goals and three assists for 20 points. McKendree's Sydnee Carroll was second with eight goals and five helpers for 21 points. In goal, McKendree's Zoe Brochu is tops in the conference with a .338 goals against average with Bellarmine's Taylor Smith a close second at .362.

ACADEMIC HONORS…Mattingly was named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American (Second Team) last season as was the fourth Bulldog to earn that honor. In addition, 21 players on the 2016 roster earned the Academic All-GLVC award, meaning they posted at least a 3.30 GPA for the academic year.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD…The Truman Women's Soccer team earned the GLVC Sportsmanship Award from the conference coaches last season. They joined Football, Baseball, Women's Cross Country and Swimming to earn team awards for Truman and helped the school earn their first ever conference overall sportsmanship award.

UP NEXT…The Bulldogs will have their conference bye as they will be the only team on the sidelines when the regular season comes to a close on Wednesday. After those matches are sorted out, the GLVC will announce the bracket for the conference tournament with seeds one through four hosting seeds five through eight in a match on Sunday. The winners advance to Indianapolis for the semifinals and finals.
