Head Coach Mike Cannon enters his 25th season on the Bulldog sidelines and once again Truman will have a target on their back as they kickoff their campaign with road games at Ashland (Ohio) on Thursday and Ohio Dominican on Saturday.

The Bulldogs were picked to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference title by league coaches after sharing the regular season title with Rockhurst (Mo.) last season. In addition, Truman was ranked 11th in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Association
Top 25 poll and are coming off a 15-2-4 overall record.

Ashland was 10-3-4 last year including a 1-1 draw in the season opener in Kirksville. The Eagles were picked to finish second behind Grand Valley (Mich.) State in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference preseason poll.

Goal scorers in the opener were Lauren Gokey ('27) for Ashland and Hanna Burke ('54) for Truman. Each team had 11 shots with the Bulldogs putting four on net and the Eagles three. Katie Mattingly and Courtney Barker were the goalkeepers of record.

Ohio Dominican was 7-7-5 in 2016 and was defeated by the Bulldogs 1-0 in Kirksville on a second half goal by Allison Lockett. The Panthers were picked third, with a pair of first-place votes in the Great Midwest Conference coaches' poll.

Allison Lockett scored her first goal of the season in the 58th minute coming off a pass from Stephanie Williams to give the Bulldogs the lead. Katie Mattingly stopped both of the shots on goal and faced four total to notch the shutout. Marissa Wierbicki played the first half for the Panthers in net while Kelsey Harris surrendered the goal in her 45 minutes of work in the second half.

The seven goals allowed in a season matched the school record set back in 1999 only with two more games played last season.

The 16 shutouts did establish a new school mark besting the previous total of 15, set in both 2001 and 2004. It was the 18th time out of 29 years of Truman Women's Soccer that the team notched over 10 shutouts in a season.
