NOTES: Women Eye Victories Against Top GLVC Teams At Home

William Jewell/Rockhurst

The two Great Lakes Valley Conference hailing from the Kansas City area sit atop the league standings after the first weekend of conference games and will be in Kirksville for big early season showdowns with the Truman Women's Soccer team.

William Jewell and Rockhurst are both 4-0 on the young season and 2-0 in the GLVC. Truman enters the weekend with an 0-2-2 overall mark and 0-1-1 in conference.

The Bulldogs swept the KC road trip last year with a pair of 1-0 wins at Jewell and Rockhurst.

Kelsey Murphy converted on a penalty kick in the 19th minute and the Bulldog offense peppered Jewell for 19 total shots in the win. Katie Mattingly made her only save of the game in the fourth minute of action en route to the shutout.

The tables were turned on the following Sunday as Rockhurst had 22 shots to the Bulldogs three but the only Truman shot on goal mattered as Stephanie Williams took a feed from Hanna Burke and beat Ali Wallner in the 57th minute for the game winner. Mattingly stopped all nine shots on goal she faced and earned GLVC Defensive and National player of the week honors.

Truman opened up league play at Quincy on Friday night and the Lady Hawks scored in each half to record a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs. On Sunday at home, Delaney Kooken scored 45 seconds into the second half but Illinois Springfield got an equalizer in the 71st minute to earn the draw.

Jewell has not allowed a goal in the four games they have played with non-league shutouts over Missouri Southern (1-0) and Southwest Baptist (1-0) and have league wins over Illinois Springfield (2-0) and Lewis (1-0). Five different players have scored for the Cardinals and Jordan Lewis has stopped all 16 shots on goal for the four shutouts.

Rockhurst is 4-0 on the season with non-conference wins against Missouri Southern (3-1) and Northwest Missouri (3-1) and league wins over Lewis (1-0 OT) and Wisconsin-Parkside (1-0). Seven Hawks have scored goals this year with Cate Sommerhoff leading the team with two goals. Rosie Breheny is 4-0 with a 0.49 goals against average and has made 18 saves.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS…Katie Mattingly is fourth on the Truman career shutouts list with 33.5 in her 60 games between the pipes. She is fourth in games in goal, nine back of third place and Emily Huyck (1998-01).

EARLY SEASON NUMBERS…Murphy and Kooken have tallied both goals this season. Megan Oostendorp and Erin Chynoweth have the helpers on the goals. Truman has had 18 of their 32 shots on net. Mattingly has made 17 stops on 23 shots on goal and has played all 400 minutes in net for the Bulldogs this season.

RETURNING ALL-CONFERENCE…Mattingly, Laura Ney and Caity Schmitt all return as first team all-GLVC members from a year ago. Casey Maloney was a third team selection. Stephanie Williams (second team), Megan Whitehead (second team) and Megan Caserly (third team) were senior all-conference members last year. In addition, Head Coach Mike Cannon garnered his first GLVC Coach of the Year award and the Midwest Coach of the Year honor. Cannon was a eight-time MIAA Coach of the Year from 1999-2009.

ACADEMIC HONORS…Mattingly was named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American (Second Team) last season as was the fourth Bulldog to earn that honor. In addition, 21 players on the 2016 roster earned the Academic All-GLVC award, meaning they posted at least a 3.30 GPA for the academic year.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD…The Truman Women's Soccer team earned the GLVC Sportsmanship Award from the conference coaches last season. They joined Football, Baseball, Women's Cross Country and Swimming to earn team awards for Truman and helped the school earn their first ever conference overall sportsmanship award.

UP NEXT…The Bulldogs head out to Drury and Missouri S&T next weekend. They will face the Panthers at 5 p.m. on Friday and the Miners at noon on Sunday.
