NOTES: Truman Hopes To Keep Things Rolling On Road

Drury/Missouri S&T

The Bulldog Women's Soccer team found their scoring touch and got back on the winning track by taking both games in Kirksville over the weekend. They will play Drury University on Friday and Missouri S&T on Sunday to continue Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Paige Peterson blasted a shot from 22 yards out for the lone goal in a 1-0 win over William Jewell on Friday and Allison Lockett recorded a pair of goals and an assist in a 4-0 rout over Rockhurst on Sunday. The Bulldogs entered the weekend with just two goals on the season and scored five in the two wins. Not to be overlooked, Katie Mattingly and the Truman defense, anchored by Laura Ney, posted consecutive shutouts.

Drury is 1-3 in the league and 3-3-1 overall. They have lost three straight to Indianapolis (1-0), Illinois Springfield (3-0) and Quincy (2-1). The Bulldogs won 2-1 over the Panthers last season in Kirksville with Hanna Burke and Delaney Kooken scoring the goals.

Missouri S&T are winless in their six games this season and have been outscored 11-3 during that stretch. They lost 1-0 to Lewis and 2-0 to Illinois Springfield over the weekend. Truman outshot the Miners 19-9 last year in Kirksville while Burke and Megan Whitehead had the goals in the 2-0 win.

GLVC WEEKLY AWARDS…Senior midfielder Allison Lockett was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after her two goals, one assist performance against Rockhurst on Sunday. It was the first POW award for the Bulldogs this season and first in the career for Lockett. Katie Mattingly won five defensive player of the week awards last season and Kelsey Murphy was an offensive player of the week on September 19 last year.

USING THE DEPTH…The Bulldogs used 21 players on Friday against William Jewell 23 players in the victory over Rockhurst on Sunday. Only three players did not leave the field in the 180 game minutes, goalkeeper Katie Mattingly and defenders Laura Ney and Camryn Sprague.

SHUTTING THE DOOR…Mattingly's first two shutouts of the season moved her up to 35.5 career shutouts. She is 2.5 behind Lauren Davis for third place in Truman lore, 3.5 behind Jenny Miller for second 8.5 back of Emily Huyck's school record of 43 shutouts. Mattingly will pass Huyck in career minutes played with 60 this upcoming weekend. She has 5,809:18 minutes in goal.

PUSHING HISTORY…The Bulldogs scored 42 seconds into the match against Rockhurst on Sunday with Hanna Hickey scoring her first collegiate off a pass from Kelsey Murphy. While pretty early in the match it was not the fastest goal in Truman history. Molly Swartzbaugh scored 15 seconds into a match in 1997. The fastest goal in NCAA Division II history is seven seconds by Jennifer Prior of Saginaw Valley State in 2003.

PUSHING HISTORY PART II…Lockett's two goals in a span of 29 seconds is most likely a Truman record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same player. The Division II record for that feat is nine seconds by Casie Poyssick of Saint Leo in 2003.

AROUND THE GLVC…Two teams are undefeated in conference play with McKendree and Quincy sitting atop the league at 3-0. Both teams are 5-0 overall. Seven teams, including Truman have one loss. The top eight teams in the conference will qualify for the league tournament that begins at the end of the season.

RETURNING ALL-CONFERENCE…Mattingly, Laura Ney and Caity Schmitt all return as first team all-GLVC members from a year ago. Casey Maloney was a third team selection. Stephanie Williams (second team), Megan Whitehead (second team) and Megan Caserly (third team) were senior all-conference members last year. In addition, Head Coach Mike Cannon garnered his first GLVC Coach of the Year award and the Midwest Coach of the Year honor. Cannon was a eight-time MIAA Coach of the Year from 1999-2009.

ACADEMIC HONORS…Mattingly was named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American (Second Team) last season as was the fourth Bulldog to earn that honor. In addition, 21 players on the 2016 roster earned the Academic All-GLVC award, meaning they posted at least a 3.30 GPA for the academic year.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD…The Truman Women's Soccer team earned the GLVC Sportsmanship Award from the conference coaches last season. They joined Football, Baseball, Women's Cross Country and Swimming to earn team awards for Truman and helped the school earn their first ever conference overall sportsmanship award.

UP NEXT…The Bulldogs return home for another conference weekend with a Friday match against Maryville University and a Sunday contest against the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
