NOTES: Women's Soccer Raises Curtain On GLVC Play

The Bulldogs will look to rebound after a tough road swing through Ohio when they begin the Great Lakes Valley Conference season at rival Quincy on Friday evening. Truman went 0-1-1 against Ashland and Ohio Dominican.
 
Senior Kelsey Murphy scored the only goal over the weekend as her equalizer enabled a 1-1 draw at Ashland on Thursday. On Saturday, the Panthers scored two goals within the first 22 minutes of the match to win 2-0 over the Bulldogs.
 
Quincy came away with two victories on the same trip as the Bulldogs as the Lady Hawks blanked Ashland 2-0 and Ohio Dominican 1-0.
 
The Bulldogs are 11-11-4 against Quincy all-time and defeated the Lady Hawks 1-0 last season. Stephanie Williams scored the goal in the 23rd minute and Katie Mattingly made 11 saves to record the shutout.
 
Sunday, Truman plays in front of the home crowd for the first time in the regular season when Illinois Springfield comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. match. The Prairie Stars also competed in Ohio during the opening weekend and defeated Findlay 2-1 before drawing with Tiffin 2-2. They defeated Lindenwood 1-0 on Tuesday and play at William Jewell on Friday before heading to Kirksville.
 
Truman is 4-0 all-time against UIS. Last year, Delaney Kooken scored with under nine minutes left to play to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win in Springfield.
 
CONFERENCE SUCCESS…Boasting an over 80% winning percentage in conference games all-time, the Bulldogs shared the league title with Rockhurst last year with a 12-1-2 league record. Truman has won nine Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season championship and the shared GLVC title last year. Truman is 162-29-26 (.806) in conference games and 43-7-10 (.800) in GLVC league tilts.
 
LAST YEAR…Truman set a school record with 16 shutouts and allowed seven goals total in 21 games played…keeper Katie Mattingly was the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year and Head Coach Mike Cannon was the GLVC Coach of the Year…The Bulldogs finished 15-2-4 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals where they lost to Grand Valley State. It was Truman's 23rd straight winning season and 12th NCAA Tournament appearance.
 
CLIMBING THE CHARTS…Katie Mattingly is fourth on the Truman career shutouts list with 33.5 in her 60 games between the pipes. She is fourth in games in goal, nine back of third place and Emily Huyck (1998-01).
 
EARLY SEASON NUMBERS…Truman has been outshot 28-14 in the first two games and 11-9 in shots on goal…opponents have taken seven more corner kicks than the Bulldogs thus far (12-5)…senior Kelsey Murphy leads the team with all four of her shots being on goal and she has the lone tally this season.
 
RETURNING ALL-CONFERENCE…Mattingly, Laura Ney and Caity Schmitt all return as first team all-GLVC members from a year ago. Casey Maloney was a third team selection. Stephanie Williams (second team), Megan Whitehead (second team) and Megan Caserly (third team) were senior all-conference members last year. In addition, Head Coach Mike Cannon garnered his first GLVC Coach of the Year award and the Midwest Coach of the Year honor. Cannon was a eight-time MIAA Coach of the Year from 1999-2009.
 
ACADEMIC HONORS…Mattingly was named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American (Second Team) last season as was the fourth Bulldog to earn that honor. In addition, 21 players on the 2016 roster earned the Academic All-GLVC award, meaning they posted at least a 3.30 GPA for the academic year.
 
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD…The Truman Women's Soccer team earned the GLVC Sportsmanship Award from the conference coaches last season. They joined Football, Baseball, Women's Cross Country and Swimming to earn team awards for Truman and helped the school earn their first ever conference overall sportsmanship award.
 
UP NEXT…The Bulldogs will return to the home pitch for two more league games next weekend. Truman will host William Jewell on Friday at 3:30 p.m. then have a showdown with Rockhurst on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Bulldogs and Hawks tied for the GLVC regular season championship last season.
