Truman Women Hosts Lewis In GLVC Quarterfinals Sunday

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Women's Soccer team will be the top seed and host #8 Lewis University in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament at noon on Sunday.

An admission price of $5.00 will be charged at the gates with only Truman and Lewis students with their college ID will be admitted free. The match will also be streamed on the GLVC Sports Network.

The Bulldogs got the number one seed and were one of three teams to share the regular season GLVC Championship. Truman's 2-0 record over McKendree (Ill.) and Southern Indiana gave them the top spot in a logjam of schools that had the top eight teams separated by one win.

Following the matches on October 19, last Friday night, Lewis was on top of the GLVC standings with an 8-3 conference mark. Two overtime losses later, both at home, the Flyers dropped to the eighth and final spot in the tournament. Lewis lost 1-0 to Maryville and 2-1 to Southern Indiana.

Truman won three straight road tilts, two in extra time. Maggie Beem scored the OT winner against McKendree last Friday, Hanna Burke picked up the golden goal against Illinois Springfield on Sunday and an "own goal" was the difference against William Jewell on Wednesday. Truman trailed 2-1 to Illinois Springfield before getting the win and trailed 2-0 to Jewell before scoring the final three.

Series History…
Sunday's matchup is an intriguing opponent for the Bulldogs. Lewis is the only conference school in which Truman does not have a win over since joining the league in 2013. That includes a 2-1 loss at home to the Flyers in the GLVC opener on September 14. Kailey Parnello scored five and a half minutes into that match for the early lead. Truman's Laura Ney scored her only goal of the season off a free kick but 10 minutes later, Abby Gustafson scored on another free kick to give Lewis the 2-1 win.

The series is tied 7-7-4 dating back to 1986 but 0-2-4 since the two teams started playing under the GLVC banner. Truman's last win was in 1999, a 3-0 win in Romeoville.

About the Bulldogs…
The Bulldogs scored 30 regular season goals, up from 18 last season, with 13 players hitting the back of the net. Hanna Burke leads the team with five goals and five assists for 15 points with Maggie Beem, four goals and four assists and Faith Branson, four goals and two assists the other two Bulldogs with more than 10 points this season. Paige Peterson leads the team with 18 shots on goal followed by Branson's 15 and Burke's 11.

The defensive side of Truman is led by two-time All-GLVC defender Laura Ney, Camryn Sprague, Leah Bolskar and Ketoura Ngwa. Beth Hopwood has played every minute in goal this season as a freshman and has nine shutouts and a 0.68 goals against average.

About the Flyers…
Kailey Parnello is second in the GLVC in goals scored with eight and leads the conference in total shots with 75 with 4.41 per game. She is the only Flyer player with more than 10 shots on goal and has 30 with the next closest being Courtney Sengstock with nine. Katie Cummins, Karly Soy and Cali Havelka-Vanderplow all have three goals apiece.

In net, Bri Riscossa and Lucy Clark have split time. Clark has more games played with 10 but is 4-4-1 with a 1.13 GAA. Riscossa is 5-2-1 in eight matches and also a 1.13 goals-against mark.

GLVC Tournament history…
Truman has qualified for the league's postseason tournament every year since joining the league in 2013. They have hosted a quarterfinal game four of the five previous times and have won the match when it has been played on the home soil. Last year, Truman lost 1-0 to Maryville University on the road.

The Bulldogs made it to and won the championship match in 2015.

Between the MIAA and GLVC, Truman has won or shared 11 conference regular season titles.

Up Next...
