KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - After a two-game skid, its first of the season, to open Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play on Sept. 7-8, the Truman State University volleyball team came home for the first time and got back to its winning ways. The Bulldogs cruised to a pair of sweeps this past week over the likes of William Jewell on Tuesday and rival, Quincy, four days later. The Purple and White will take that two-match winning streak on the road to face Southern Indiana and Bellarmine on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Scouting the Screaming Eagles
Prior to GLVC play, Southern Indiana couldn't have asked for a much better start that saw it go 3-1 in each of its two tournaments to start the season. However, aside from a sweep over Maryville in the GLVC opener, league action hasn't been kind to the Screaming Eagles as they've dropped four in a row since that victory. Southern Indiana is coached by Leah Mercer in her 14th season and she has accumulated a record of 233-183 (.560) in that span including a conference mark of 126-101 (.555). When looking at the all-time series between the Bulldogs and Screaming Eagles, the Purple and White have lost just twice (10-2).
Scouting the Knights
Bellarmine's results so far in 2018 have been nearly identical to Southern Indiana. The Knights also went 6-2 in their first eight before a 1-4 stretch to open GLVC play. With that being said, Bellarmine has yet to lose at home, but this weekend will present the Knights with their first home GLVC matches of the season. Leading the charge for Bellarmine is sixth-year head coach, Jenni Grzebin, with a record of 86-78 (.524) including a league record of 38-57 (.400). The Knights are coming off their most successful season in program history that featured 23 wins and their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Truman has won four of its six all-time meetings with Bellarmine.
Lauren the Libero
Monday,
Lauren Wacker became Truman's first GLVC Defensive Player of the Week since former Bulldog libero and current Quincy head coach,
Abby Moser. Wacker racked up 39 digs in the Purple and White's two victories including 19 in the home opener against the Cardinals and 20 vs. the Hawks. Among the best in the GLVC, Wacker is 10th in digs per set with 4.40. In the school's career record book, the Chesterfield, Mo. native is currently second in digs per set (4.71) behind Moser (4.74) and needs 35 digs to break into the school's top 10.
Up Next
Truman will return home for the first of three in a row inside Pershing Arena when it takes a break from the GLVC and faces Missouri Western State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
