PREVIEW: Big Home Matches On Tap For Truman Women's Soccer

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Four home matches remain on the Truman Women's Soccer schedule with two big contests this weekend. The Bulldogs will host Southern Indiana on Friday afternoon and conference leader McKendree on Sunday with both starting at 2:30 p.m.

Truman currently holds the seventh spot in the conference standings as things start to sort out down the stretch. The top eight teams earn a spot in the GLVC postseason tournament with top four hosting first round matches. The Bulldogs are 6-5 in the league, with a .545 winning percentage while Bellarmine, Indianapolis and Southern Indiana are right in front of Truman with identical 7-3-1 (.682) records. On the backside of the Bulldogs is Missouri S&T (5-5-1/.500) and Lewis (4-4-3/.500).

The team halved their matches last weekend on their final road trip of the regular season. The Bulldogs downed Missouri S&T 2-0 behind a pair of goals from Chance Douglass. However on Sunday, an overtime goal ended Truman's four-match winning streak as Maryville University got the 1-0 win.

Douglass has tallied all of her points in the last four matches and now leads the team with four goals and one assist for nine points. Paige Peterson and Anna Meyer have three goals apiece and single goals have come from Hanna Burke, Isabel Kurzban, Faith Branson, Hanna Liljegren and Allie Cross. Truman has 15 goals on the season and allowed 11.

Beth Hopwood has five shutouts this season and a 0.81 goals-against average. She has an 86.1% save percentage and has played all 1200 minutes in goal this season.

Southern Indiana has shutout out eight of their 13 opponents this season but has allowed four of their season eight goals in the last three games. They lost 2-0 at Rockhurst on October 13, defeated Illinois Springfield 3-1 last Friday and tied Lewis 1-1  on Sunday. Maya Etienne has played all but 22 minutes in net for the Screaming Eagles and has an 89% save percentage. The United Soccer Coaches Association ranked USI seventh in the Midwest region.

Offensively, the Screaming Eagles have scored 25 times with six goals by Maggie Winter and five from Katlyn Andres. Including those two, USI have six players with multiple goals this season.

Last year in Kirksville, Truman blanked USI 2-0 on a first half goal from Faith Branson and a late second half score from Chance Douglass. The Bulldogs dominated the shots category with 24 for the game compared to USI's eight. Beth Hopwood made three saves for the shutout.

All-time, Truman leads the series 8-2-1 and 5-2 since joining the GLVC. USI held serve in Evansville for their last win in the series in 2017 by a 2-1 score.

McKendree was just on the outside of the United Soccer Coaches Association Top 25 poll this week and were the number four team ranked in the Midwest region. The Bearcats are 11-2-1 overall and 9-1-1 in conference with their only loss coming to Rockhurst 1-0 on October 11. They have surrendered only two goals in the last eight matches.

Zoe Brochu is one of the elite keepers in the GLVC, earning conference defensive player of the year honors last season. Brochu has eight shutouts, a 0.49 goals-against mark and an 89.7% save percentage.

On the offensive side, McKendree has six players with multiple goals led by Madyson Mossman with four and Sydnee Carroll with three.

The Bulldogs have been a thorn in the side of the Bearcats posting a 6-0-2 all-time record against McKendree. Only three goals have been scored in the last five matches between the two programs, all by Truman. In fact, McKendree has been shutout by the Bulldogs in seven straight encounters dating back to their first match in 2013. Both ties, in 2016 and in 2017 were scoreless draws.

Last year in Lebanon, Maggie Beem and Hanna Burke teamed up and scored 31 seconds into extra time to give Truman the 1-0 road win. It was Beem that took the pass from Burke and put it behind Brochu for the golden goal.

Truman will close the regular season with home dates against Missouri-St. Louis and conference newcomer Lindenwood next weekend in Kirksville.
