RECAP: Bulldogs Fall in McKnight’s Season Debut

ALLENDALE, Mich.—The Truman Men's Basketball team got a boost on Thursday night with the return of last year's second leading scorer Cade McKnight. He was second on the team with 19 points and led the team with seven rebounds in 30 minutes but it was not enough as Grand Valley State defended their home floor with an 85-76 victory.

GVSU got off to a fast start to begin the game, scoring the first seven points. With 17:14 remaining in the half, the Bulldogs finally got on the board with a bucket from Hunter Strait. GVSU would push the lead into double digits at 12-2, and maintain a relatively safe lead of the rest of the half. With 4:31 to go GVSU took their biggest lead of the half at 39-22, but from there Truman closed the half on a 12-3 run to get the deficit to eight at intermission. It started with a three pointer from McKnight, followed with two buckets from Strait and closed out by a layup from Turner Scott to make it 42-34.

The momentum from the end of the first half carried over into the start of the second. The Bulldogs opened the half on a 13-5 run, with threes from Luke TerHark, Brodric Thomas and Strait. However, the hosts would answer with an 8-1 run to take a 55-48 lead, but the Bulldogs would not go down without a fight. A three pointer from Thomas got TSU back within a possession at 55-52, and from there it was game on. Strait drained a three to tie the game and then a three point play from Thomas gave the Bulldogs a 58-55 lead; their first of the game. From there GVSU went on an 8-0 run to take back the lead at 63-58, but once again TSU chipped away and after two free throws from McKnight took back the lead at 66-65. Later on with the score deadlocked at 70, Strait drained a three to give Truman the lead with just over three minutes to go, but another 8-0 run gave GVSU the lead for good.

Truman shot well from the field in this one, making 25-53 shots from the field (47.2%) and 10-24 from beyond the arc (41.7%). Thomas led the team with 23 points, while Strait made four threes for 12 of his 18 points. Turner Scott led the team with four steals and tied for the team lead with five assists.

The Bulldogs will hit the court against Davenport Saturday afternoon at 3 PM ET/2 CT, looking to get back in the win column.
