HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. - For the first time in six years and second instance under head coach,
Erin Brown, the Truman State University softball program has won its first three games of the season. The Bulldogs defeated Urbana in a 19-run, 21-hit slugfest, 12-7, before taking the pitchers' dual of a nightcap over Davenport, 3-1.
For the week, Truman hit a blistering .360 (31-for-86) to go with a solid 2.67 ERA in the circle. Two of those 31 hits were the Bulldogs' first home runs of the season including a solo shot from
Christa Reisinger in the sixth inning of game one and another solo dinger from
Morgan McMahan in the same inning of game two. Reisinger hit an other-wordly .800 (8-of-10) for the week with a 1.400 slugging percentage and
Lauren Dale posted a miniscule 0.47 ERA in 15 innings pitched.
In just Saturday's two games, six Bulldogs racked up multiple hits including Reisinger (5-of-6),
Adrienne Compton (3-for-5),
Emma Walbert (3-of-6),
Alyssa Rivera (3-for-8),
Lauren Bowman (2-of-6), and McMahan (2-for-7).
In the victory over Urbana, Truman struck first and led throughout with two runs in the first, three in the third, four in the fourth, and three more in the sixth.
Maria McGonegle made her first career start as a Bulldog and went three innings with three earned runs given up on five hits. In relief,
Alyssa Hajduk (1-0) was credited with the win after three frames of work before
Lauren Dale closed it out with a scoreless seventh.
Against Davenport, the Panthers were on the board first with an RBI double in the bottom of the first and it took awhile for Truman to get the offense rolling. The Bulldogs tallied five hits through the first five innings, but couldn't bring anybody around until the fifth. Walbert singled in
Kayla Quanstrum in the fifth, McMahan hit her bomb to left in the sixth and Reisinger doubled in Quanstrum in the seventh.
That was plenty of run support for Dale (2-0) who went the distance for her 33rd career complete game. The senior scattered four hits over the seven innings pitched with not a single walk and four strikeouts.
Next up for Truman is Southern Indiana's Midwest Region Crossover with six games in three days from Feb. 22-24 in Evansville, Ind.
