KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The women's volleyball team will compete in its second tournament of the season this weekend at the Drury Tournament in Springfield, Mo. Their opponents on Friday will be Colorado Mesa at 9 a.m. and Missouri Western State at 3 p.m. On Saturday they hit the court against Northern State (S.D.) at 11 a.m. and then finish the weekend against Northwest Missouri State at 5 p.m.
The Bulldogs went 2-2 at the Nova Southeastern Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. last weekend, defeating Shaw and Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Outside hitter Morgan Smith and libero Lauren Wacker had standout performances, earning spots on the all-tournament team. Smith set a career high with 22 kills against Shaw and Wacker had 102 digs total in the four matches.
About the Opponents:
The previous matchup against Colorado Mesa was a 3-0 sweep for Mavericks in Canyon, Texas at the Britkare Lady Buff Classic. Overall the two teams have split four matches. They started the season 3-1 and went 24-7 in 2018 with a 15-3 mark in the RMAC.
Their second opponents, the MO Western State Griffons are a frequent opponent for the Bulldogs. Truman has won three straight in the series and overall the Bulldogs are 49-22 against them. They have a 4-0 mark on the season after going 15-17 (7-11 MIAA) last season.
Truman last saw Northern State on 2016 when they played two matches against them at the Concordia-St. Paul Tournament in St. Paul, Minn. Both were wins for the Wolves, 3-0 and 3-1. Before that the two played in Kearney, Neb. at the UNK Loper Invitational and Truman swept the match. They are also 4-0 this season and went 26-5 with a 17-3 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The last time Truman saw NW MO St. was Halloween 2017, which was a 3-0 win for the Bulldogs. Overall Truman has won four of the last five and six of the last eight against the Bearcats. All-time Truman leads the series 59-27-1, with frequent meetings coming as members of the MIAA. The have started the season 4-0 in 2019 after going 22-8 (14-4) in 2018.
