RECAP: Strait Drains Five Threes, Peeters Gets First Double-Double as Truman Downs UIS

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—Entering the game winners of three of their last four games, the Truman Men's Basketball team continued their home dominance as they moved to 5-0 at Pershing Arena and 5-1 in the GLVC with a 74-61 victory over Illinois Springfield. Hunter Strait led the team with 19 points, a season high, and Dylan Peeters got his first career double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.

Early on the two teams were neck and neck, not being able to stretch a lead on the other. With UIS up 5-4, the Bulldogs went on a 13-0 run to jump out to a 17-5 lead. Strait began the run with a three pointer, then Cade McKnight got back to back buckets and Peeters got two baskets—including a thunderous dunk to push the lead into double digits before Brodric Thomas capped the run with a jumper. Peeters got another dunk with 10:27 left in the half to push Truman to their largest lead of the half at 27-10. The Bulldogs would lead by double digits most of the rest of the half, but would go to intermission with their lead slashed to just nine at 41-32.

Early in the second a couple buckets from UIS got them back within a handful at 48-43. Truman quickly answered with layups from Strait and Alex McQuinn to restore the nine point lead. Each time UIS would get close Truman had an answer and would push the lead back to double digits; until 8:14 when the Bulldogs got a double digit lead they held for good.

It is the second time Strait has led the team in scoring this season and McKnight was second with 17. Thomas added 16 as four Bulldogs reached double figures. In addition to 10 points and 11 boards, Peeters also set a new career high with five steals.

Truman looks to move to 6-0 at home this weekend as they welcome Lewis to Pershing Arena this Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip off.
