RECAP: Truman Softball Heads Home After Split On Final Day

CLEARMONT, Fla. – The Truman Softball team wrapped up their spring break trip with their toughest test to date as the lost 9-1 to #1-ranked and defending national champion Augustana in their Tuesday opener. The Bulldogs bounced back and pounded out 17 hits in an 11-2 win over Indiana (Pa.) in the trip finale.

For the Florida swing, the Bulldogs hit .284 as a team with five home runs and 30 runs batted in. McKenzie West hit .560 over the eight games with three bombs and five RBI. West was 14-of-25 with three doubles and drew a pair of walks. Emma Walbert hit .462 with 12 hits in 26 at bats.

Truman went 4-4 on the trip and sits at 5-7 heading into the start of Great Lakes Valley Conference play at home this weekend. The Bulldogs will welcome Drury University on Saturday and league newcomer and old MIAA mate Southwest Baptist on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at noon.

The defending champs scored early and often in a 9-1 victory over the Bulldogs.

Right out of the gate, a pair of walks led to a three-run homer by Torri Chute for a 3-0 Vikings lead.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs in their half of the first inning but a double play with the catch in center and the throw out at the plate stymied the rally and the next hitter fanned to leave the Bulldogs empty on the scoreboard.

Chute knocked in two more with a double in a three-run second and Augustana would add three more in the fourth.

Truman's run came in the fifth on a walk drawn by Kayla Quanstrum and an RBI single from McKenzie West.

It was Truman's turn to put the pressure on their opponents as the Bulldogs scored runs in the first four innings. Kayla Quanstrum drew a bases loaded walk and Callie Unrein had an RBI single in a two-run first. Emma Walbert had a two-out RBI in the second and Quanstrum knocked a two-run homer in the third to put Truman ahead 5-0.

Annabel Zimmer got the nod in the circle for Truman and was able to weave out of early trouble. She stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and a runner at third in the second. Indiana made a leadoff walk payoff with a two-out RBI single to make it 5-1 in the third.

Truman sent nine hitters to the dish and scored three times to break the game open. Taylor Spencer started the rally with a single and later scored on a hit by Callie Patterson.

Alyssa Hajduk relieved Zimmer after the first three reached in the bottom of the fourth and set down the next three hitters in order allowing only one run to make it 8-2.

The Bulldogs would punch home a single tally in the sixth and scored twice in the seventh.

Walbert was 4-for-5 with a double and three singles for Truman.
