RECAP: Strong Pitching; Timely Hitting Gives Softball Sweep Over UMSL

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Two masterful pitching performances and clutch hitting gave the Truman Softball team their first Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep on Sunday as they downed Missouri-St. Louis by scored of 3-1 and 4-0.

Rachel Kernich allowed only two hits in the opener as she was staked to a 3-run lead in the first inning.
A single, a walk and some stolen bases put runners in scoring position for Ellie Weltha and she delivered with a hit to left field scoring Emma Walbert for the 1-0 lead.

With two outs, Lauren Bowman got a clutch two-run single to center with Weltha beating the tag at the dish for a 3-0 lead.

Kernich gave up an RBI groundout in the third but stranded two UMSL runners to keep it 3-1.

She then retired the next 11 Triton hitters with only a two-out hit by pitch in the seventh inning before getting the final out on a fly ball to center to end the game.

Game two was another tight affair until the Bulldog fifth.

A lead off error put Callie Unrein aboard and she was sacrificed to second by Kayla Quanstrum.

Walbert got a ball up the middle but Unrein was held at second.

Maria McGonegle lifted a fly ball that drifted with the wind toward the left field line. The UMSL shortstop ranged over and made the tough catch but her momentum took her to the ground. Unrein then raced home for the 1-0 lead.

Cameryn Patterson was the next hitter and soared a ball that burned the centerfield and went to the fence allowing Walbert to score for the 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Shelby Webster was hit by a pitch to start the inning then with two-outs, Unrein uncorked a line drive shot over the left field fence for her first home run and the Bulldogs led 4-0.

Annabel Zimmer struck out eight and allowed only three hits to the complete-game shutout.

Truman improves to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference. They will play at McKendree next Saturday and at Southern Indiana next Sunday.
