RECAP: Lewis/Truman Softball Split Doubleheader

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Bulldogs and Lewis Flyers played to a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon with the Flyers taking game one by a score of 4-3 and the Bulldogs grabbing the nightcap by a 6-2 tally. Truman will host the University of Indianapolis on Monday at noon.

The Bulldogs got a leadoff triple as Emma Walbert painted the third base chalk to start their half of the twinbill, however pitcher Katie David worked out of the pickle and
retired the next three Truman hitters to preserve the scoreless frame.

Lewis would get on the board in the fourth as they scored four times to chase starter Rachel Kernich. A sac fly to right gave the Flyers the 1-0 lead and was followed by an
RBI single to left and a two-run homer to center.

The Bulldogs mounted a late charge in their last at bat. Maria McGonegle hit a pinch single up the middle and went to second on a hit by Macy Taylor.
Walbert burned the centerfielder with a line shot that scored McGonegle. Taylor wandered too far off of third but didn't hesistate home and beat the throw to cut the lead down to 4-2.

Callie Unrein delivered an RBI single to score Walbert to make it 4-3 with no outs in the innings.

David then went through the heart of the Truman line up getting Ellie Weltha to strikeout, Cameryn Patterson to fly out to right and Lauren Bowman to lineout to third to end
the game.

In game two, Truman used the long ball to dispatch the Flyers 6-2.

Kayla Quanstrum knocked her first homer of the season in the third and Weltha drilled a two-run shot with both coming in a three-run third inning.

Lewis got a run back in the fourth but the Bulldogs answered back when McGonegle belted a solo shot.

Macy Taylor got into the act with an RBI single to score Lauren Stade for a 5-1 lead.

McGonegle singled in the fifth to plate Weltha for a 6-1 lead.

A sac fly got one run back in the sixth for Lewis and they loaded the bases in the seventh but Brieanna Klein got the final two outs to close the game out.

Annabel Zimmer pitched six innings to pick up her fifth win of the season.
