Bulldogs Start Postseason with Rockhurst Rematch

NOTES

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Men's Basketball team will start the postseason with a first round matchup in the GLVC Tournament against Rockhurst—the team that downed the Bulldogs on Saturday; the final day of the regular season. Truman finished as the number three seed in the GLVC PRS standings, and will match up with the 14th seeded Hawks Monday night.

The Bulldogs completed the regular season 19-8 overall and 13-6 in GLVC play. This season all 15 teams across the GLVC will play in the tournament, with higher seeds hosting each of the first round games before the quarterfinals move back to Edwardsville, Ill. and then the semifinals and championship game will follow in Edwardsville.

Rockhurst and Truman met in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament in 2020 as Cade McKnight and Broderic Thomas led the Bulldogs to victory en route to winning the tournament title. This year, Rockhurst comes into the tournament 11-19 overall and 6-14 in GLVC play, but downed Truman 84-78 on Saturday.

Truman ended the regular season tied for the top scoring offense in the league with Southwest Baptist at 79 points. The Bulldogs were first in shooting percentage at .501 and second in free throw shooting at .787 and three point shooting at .398.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of the UIndy/Missouri S&T game.

The GLVC has also made a change to how the tournament will be show. Beginning Monday, the conference has voted to put all tournament games for purchase. Users will have to create an account when they click to watch the games starting on Monday night and will have options to purchase a single-game or a tournament pass to watch all of them. 
 
About the Players:
 
Cade McKnight finished the regular season number one in the GLVC with 19.6 points per game. At .579, he finished with the seventh highest shooting percentage in the GLVC among qualified players (those with at least three shots made per game). He began the season 20th on the all-time scoring list in the history of the Bulldog program, but has now moved up to 4th this season—passing Brian Basich against Rockhurst Saturday. He now has 1559 career points, chasing Seth Jackson's 1655. With 6.4 rebounds per game this year, he set a new career high.

Masen Miller continues to be one of the top sharpshooters in the GLVC, shooting .462 from downtown—third among qualified players. At 3.4 makes per game, he led in the GLVC in made threes per contest. He continues to lead the Bulldogs in minutes per game with 35.2, which ranked fourth in the GLVC. His current career shooting percentage from three point range is .446, which puts him second on the all-time list—just .04 behind Boyd Printy for the top spot.

Hunter Strait remains one of the top distributors in the GLVC with 4.6 per game, finishing second behind Mitch Ganote of SBU. He also has moved into the top ten all time in career assists in Bulldog history with 322 assists, passing Banks Estridge for ninth against Rockhurst. He also averaged a career high 3.6 rebounds this season.

Elijah Hazekamp continues to be an all-around player for the Bulldogs—third in points per game with 12.6 and leads the team in rebounds with 7.1. His mark on the boards is good for sixth in the GLVC. He grabbed 15 boards this past week while scoring 30 points. His 12.6 scoring average ranks 23rd in the GLVC.

Eric Northweather scored in double figures in five straight games, and set a new career high with nine boards at Rockhurst Saturday. He's scored in double figures nine of the last ten games, and is averaging 9.4 points per game.

Dylan Peeters scored 17 points in the two games last week, and is averaging eight points per game this season. He's grabbed four rebounds in each of the last three games; and picked up a blocked shot against Rockhurst.

Sam Nissen is averaging 10.8 minutes per game this season, with 1.3 points per game. He averaged 13 minutes per game this past week and dished out two assists at SBU and picked up a steal at Rockhurst. He's averaging nearly an assist per game this season.

Josh Ollendieck has appeared in 18 games this season, and is averaging eight minutes per game. He picked up an assist in 11 minutes of action SBU.

Keaton Mitchell is averaging 9.6 minutes per game off the bench this season, and has seven blocked shots which ranks third on the team. He also averages 4.5 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game.

Sam Lock has played in 21 games this season, playing 6.1 minutes per game. He averages 2.1 points per game, and scored in the first half at Rockhurst.

Devin Fields has been in five games this year and made three shots from downtown. 

Series History w/Rock: The teams met for the first time in 1947, which was a 53-52 win for the Bulldogs. The teams met consistently until the end of the century, but after their meeting on December 1, 1999 they did not meet again until 2014; as members of the GLVC. As members of the GLVC Truman owns an 11-4 edge and a 30-17 edge overall.
 
About the Hawks: Nick Volz is the leader of the team with 15.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He's joined in double figures by Jake Auer (12.6), Rich Bhyre (11.8) and Maxim Romanov (10.5). The team snapped an eight game losing streak on Saturday by defeating the Bulldogs.
